What would it be like if players could construct trade lanes and space stations? If, after construction, they appeared on the server as permanent stations within 2-3 days? If players could capture stations from other factions for their factions?

It is possible. How does it sound?

Not possible.
The game engine wasn't meant for that.

All new stations have to be added to the mod.
Do you imagine having to download the mod again every time a player builds something?

I know all new stations have to be added to the mod. It only takes 20 seconds to download the mod in the first place. I wouldn't mind waiting that long.

No going to be done. Forget about it.

--Igiss, the mod creator, has to add all the stations and stuff to the mod. He barely gets time to do the mod. No way he is going to give up his life just to continuously update the mod because player x wants a station there. 20 seconds to download... many ours to make... And no one of the moding time is being paid for it.

--Also, remember that this mod is run on many other servers. It would be a nightmare if it is upgraded every time a player wants to change system contents.

Is there any server-side stuff only? or everything's conducted client-side?

One would assume that the faction system method would be standardized, like there are two or three types of stations you can buy (plus weapons platforms). You supply the location and the thing you're wanting to buy, you pay the price for it, and it's yours. Not extremely time consuming.

To board stations, on the other hand, would be extremely difficult. I doubt that is possible without predetermined battles, screenshots, and the losing faction honorably admitting that they have lost the base.

If you have dial-up, you should upgrade to Cable.

Yup, upgrading is a short and easy process.

Notice the sarcasm that I'm using to convey that I am engaged in satire.

Asymptotic, while I disagree with a great deal you say (not that what you say has no merit, but because I view the world differently and therefore tend to butt the proverbial head whenever I can), I believe that I can offer you up a little piece of advice.

You should never, as a rule of thumb, correct an admin. Ever.

EVER!

Following this advice will lead you to a fruitful time here on Disco.

Not following it will call down the wrath of the Administrator known as Korrd, and with him the Pantheon of Others. God knows that wouldn't be good.

Asymptotic, you can progress in whatever path you choose. But I strongly caution back talking Korrd or Igiss. They're akin to gods here.

HAIL KORRD!

Okay, I'll go back to my corner now. I've had my fun.

We don't slay people here for airing his/her opinion... Seriously..

The closest thing you can do is to create a clan and buy a system. The guard systems are for that. You buy it, and make the system. Submit it to Igiss. And in the next version it will be added to the mod.
But forget about building bases outside that. It would mess the game...
I can't find the thread where we discussed it before. I know it's somewhere, and was rather long...
