And it gave me an idea... what if we add a "carrier license" item to the game, similar to the battleship license, which is sold and equipped automatically when a carrier-class ship is bought (order carrier, liberty carrier, IMG carrier, zoner carrier). It may be necessary to create four different licenses, one for each carrier (i.e. Order Carrier License, Liberty Carrier License, etc.).
What this item would do, in addition to functioning like a scanner (just as the battleship license does), would attract up to one group of NPC fighters of the proper faction to join formation with your ship. So, if you're an order pilot and you're flying through omicron 100 with a carrier and this license, it would attract one of the 3-fighter squadrons of Nephthys NPC's to form up with you. If you're in minor, it would attract one of the 3-fighter squadrons of Anubis NPC's to form up.
It doesnt give true docking ability, or allow you to launch dozens of fighters in battle, but it could just give an edge to carrier-class ships when enemy bombers attack, as you'll have a handful of fighters to keep them busy.
I really like that idea. Would add some realism to the Disco universe.
But I see some problematic points, like:
What if you hand out the license to ooRP ships?
What if the server cap is nearly reached and no NPCs spawn at all?
Would this influence the server stability?

The license would only be sold with carrier-class ships, and we could simply add a bit of text to the license infocard saying "This license may only be equipped by the appropriate faction carrier, equipping it on any other ship is grounds for sanction."
Current carriers which were purchased before the license is added would simply have to post in a thread and have an admin put one into their cargo hold, as the license would not be sold anywhere in-game.
If you're at the server cap, obviously no NPC's will be around, so the license will just serve as a normal scanner during peak server times.
It shouldnt have any influence on server stability. Even at peak server times, running missions which spawn a few dozen NPC's dont seem to have much effect, and there's people running dozens of missions at a time on the server.

It's doable. It's been done. Unfortunately, it's been done by Chris, AKA Niezck, who's gone.

That sounds great, making Carriers abit more like Carriers makes everybody happy.

I thought the name Carrier was just for the sake of the way Liberty and Order (I believe) named their ships. It would be hard to convince me that the Rheinland Battleship, for example, doesn't operate as a carrier of strike ships. There are other such massive dreadnaughts that no doubt can hold more ships in it than the light carrier or even Liberty's carrier.
the term carrier does indeed not really apply to the ability to "carry" ships in that very case.... but more to the ability to quickly launch and dock them.
the order carrier has the ability ( in RP ) to launch a full wing of fighters / bombers at once ( 4 launch tubes ) - and spill out dozens of those in less than a few seconds in quick succession.
the liberty carrier with its two large side launchbays serves a similar purpose.
the rheinland battleship or other battleships have large docking bays - which in a way only allow one ship at a time to undock, hence - they are much slower. ( i know there is a video of the alpha version of Freelancer - that shows a lib dreadnought launch multiple fighters from its bay ... )
the idea is not bad - and how long does it take till the first "special RP" is requested to equip that item - i wonder. - after all many a roleplays will just demand for a "leading position that naturally attracts friendly fighters to form up with them"
thats not really a bad thing in a way - but its just a prediction that such a sensor will be used for other than just these two carriers.
oh - and there are more "carriers" that are supposed to have carrier characteristics.
- IMG battlestar is a full carrier
- aquilon is a carrier with 4 tubes
