The following quote comes from Dusty Lens' mining guide which is basicly the go-to for miners wanting the know-how.

Miner ID/No IFF: Alien Organisms and Scrap Metal.
I've hilighted the bit that concerns me. Who came up with this idea that your average independant miners specialise in mining alien organisms?
Surely an average miner mines solid things?
Surely some faction like the order or researchers should specialise in that. It's quite rediculous that you can't really make much of a profit because it's not your style of mining. Alien arganisms and/or scrap metal pigeon holes that character quite alot into a junker or omicron affiliation.
So here's a more suitable alternative that i see fitting.
Miner ID/No IFF: Silver, Copper and Cobalt
Is this relevant or am i barking up the wrong tree?
I've used the Miner ID/No IFF. It's quite an attractive package for those of us who don't want to join a corporation. Still, I think the miner ID should probably have a few of the metals, instead of the Alien organisms.
Maybe there was a reason we don't know about why it was first written like that?

Silver's pretty popular to mine as it is, not sure if that's a good idea. You'll have people complaining about independent Miners next. *eyeroll*
On a more useful note, Scrap Metal makes sense for independent salvager-types, allowing the Miner ID to cover more than just "mining".
How about... Copper, Cobalt, and Scrap Metal?
I'd also suggest adding Freelancer IFF as an option for Miner ID simply because I hate flying without an IFF. Or that could be used to switch between lists. For example, hypothetically:
