How to PM someone in game without having to select name from list?

Every time I want to PM someone, its a real hassle to select from the big list. Any way to reply/start conversation with someone without having to do that?

There also used to be this player id number thing where one didn't need to type out the character name but i can't seem to remember the command for it.
