A question has been troubling my mind for a couple night now. A lot of complaints I got in the recent weeks concerned the use of superior numbers against inferior ones. Such... practise was several times called ganking and generally despised.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but We're all wasting more or less of our time here to Role-play, right?

So... Suppose there's a flight of fleet fighters and all the sudden a pirate jumps out from behind a rock and starts shooting. What should the four fleet pilots do?

option a) The leader shields his men with his ship and calls the pirate out on a duel of honour
orption b) All pilots, following military doctrine engage attempting to eliminate the threat before it causes any harm/damage to anyone.

Suppose we picked option A. The flight leader might be defeated. And then what? The three surviving officers say "Begone now, leave us to our murning"/"Well fought pirate" and ignore the pirate as he buzzes off, heavily damaged. Or maybe they should avaenge their leaer and do a 3:1 vs a damaged pirate, triggering accusations of practising the unholy GANK?
Suppose we picked B. The pirate can hardly make a joust-turn or see who's shooting him without buying a handful of lead/photon/neutron/missle. He's shield-running, cursing under the nose that someone stood in his righteous and justified path of collectiong blue messages, sends a wad of whines at the four pilots and/or writes a colourful and eloquent complaint in some feedback thread.

Well... I think it's bull****. (Oops, I just defiled this holy board with foul language!)

In the end I'm quite confused. Do we RP here or not? Should a military outfit respond to a threat as if it was a military outfit or should we practise de-facto completely outta-roleplay duels? Always even, always fair. Or maybe duels are the desired "RP"? Maybe every time RM and LN or BAF/KNF mett each of their pilots should pick a duel partner from the other side and decide the battle in the course of several, simultaneous 1 on 1 fights? Like in the Middle Ages?

or maybe the bretonians should exploit the KNF's supply weakness, hit their trade lanes and starve them to death in their cockpits? Maybe the LN should just play delay and wait till the already-weakened Rheinland economy collapses completely because of the strain put on it by the prolonging war?

And now Ladies and Gentlemen, your flames.

I think duels are fine at the end of a battle, when one side has been reduced to a single ship. The best pilot of the winning side can challenge the last remaining ship to a duel, which I always find fun.

I think 2 on 1 is a fair practice. A bit military-like, but keeps it fun for both sides.

It's not a gank, if he attacks first, IMO

Very true, if he attacks a massive bunch of enemies, he's asking for a gank.

We must to state a diffrence between where we need reality in our rp and where we dont. Sometimes gank fights are even more intresting - yes. But mostly they arent.

We are here to have agood time. To play, and let other to play. ussaly by overhelming force we just push others into survival more then fight or game. And it isint fun for the most of the people. We shouldnt secrafice fun in the sake of reality or rp in the game. Aren't im right?

Sometimes there is truely foolish to jump on huge ban and expecta fair fight, but if both sieds want fight, sometimes we can make a deal by just simple dueling. To have fun for yourself and give a chance to other.

The whole concept of dueling only works if you do it in the Heavy Gear style, where both the landships were cooked, and they decided to have their duelists, duel to decide the fate of either ship, so, it really only works as a 'let's settle this with honour' than a 'Do it because of honour'.

Personally I just think it's a question of defense or offense like many others who I'm sure will agree with me.

For example if I go on a raid to Gamma in my Outcast with 5 other fighters with me I expect to see 20 Corsairs all firing upon me until I'm dead. However if it is the other way around say that there is only 5 Corsairs and 20 Outcasts attacking in Gamma well that's when I call it wrong.

A force will send out a squadren of fighters to attack their enemies not the entire force as this would leave their home undefended.

The same applies when pirating in my eyes. 5 pirates needn't attack 1 trader all at once it's silly and a waste of energy, however turn the tables and 5 traders getting attacked by 1 pirate and I say the traders should all work together to eliminate the threat.

Ganking really is something that has to be taken into context as to whether or not if it is "right"
For me though it is a game and as such I try to play it fair when I can to make it fun for everyone, which doesn't always happen but hey you can't win em all right? Just like you can't change the fact that ganking can and will always happen. Getting rid of ganking is about as easy as getting rid of players and nobody really wants that do they?

Sometimes people are happy to be ganked, sometimes it's just annoying. Players =/= Characters. Give the opposing player a little nudge, asking if it's alright. If he freaks out, it might not be alright. If he is up for it, enjoy your swarm.

I say this as someone who is often swarmed, and who often has to disperse swarms.
