.......and do you really have to say "Opening Fire" or something similar before you can open fire?

Right, so here we go. Names have been deleted as they are not important here.

The background - I spot two corsairs in Cambridge, so I move to intercept. I get to the Cambridge gate in New London and jump through, expecting to start hunting the two reprobates there. But what do i find? The two aforementioned corsairs, shooting trade and Bretonian police NPCs. There is debris scattered all around.

A few words are thrown around. And I mean a few, I'm sat in my Orca with a Praetorian and a Gladiator buzzing around, still shooting the NPC pilots. During the short exchange I am invited to make them leave and I accept, shooting ensues, the Praet gets a triple razor after a couple of minutes, and the Gladiator takes off.

Here's the chat log. There are time stamps in there so you can get an idea of what happened when. I started shooting at the point that one of the corsairs said "Yeah, that's Gaians". I fairly sure my first shot was across the bows of the Praet, and not a hit on his shields. The Praet was not the one talking at the time, and was not sat still, nor on an undeviating course (ie he was dodging, though probably not in battle mode). I had made a deliberate attacking run directly at the Praet before I opened fire.

Now, considering the situation, am I in the wrong here for not sitting around and talking for however long the other side were hoping for, and taking the initiative? And by initiative I mean moving to an aggressive flight path, and after one pass opening fire on the Praet.

Please note that he did not go boom without any chance. There was a couple of minutes of the fight and he was able to get off more than a few SNAC shots at me.

I really want to know what you all think. The corsairs involved, I already know what you think, this is not about a trial by forum. I just really want to know what the rest of the community really think about this encounter. And do we have to state that we are about to open fire? Seriously? Is that really expected?

Yup, you RPed it not badly, much better than many who give an engament notice. But you forgot the notice. Its an error you did, but I ave to say its more forgiveable than many who just give the notice than start pewpewing.

Still, here are a few details.

1. Give a CLEAR engagment notice. While some like to make fancy notices, it can be confusing so he give a fancy notice, and you get killed before even having the time to say what the hell.

2. Remember a BHG can only engage if a bounty is on the other guy's head. BHG Core can engage Order, Corsairs and Nomads.

It used to be 3 words as a minimum amount of 'chatter' before hostilities could begin but that might have changed as well.

Corsairs are bountied in Bretonia. There's a standing bounty offered by the BAF and the BPA.

Eemm...

5.2 All attacks must be the result of some form of role play. "Engaging" is not sufficient. An attack is any hostile action that drains shields to less than 50%. Being hit with a CD is not considered an attack. If a player is attacked he has a right to defend himself regardless of who is attacking.

Some form of role play, sitting next to your enemy is a common mistake in discovery, because they think they are covered by this rule.

Don't sit still right in front of an enemy which is cleary saying that he's about to destroy you.

I'd opened fire after the "make us".

Or people still waits for an invitation to share shots??

In all cases the more RP chatter the better:)

I've fought battles that lasted half a minute, but were preceded by nearly an hour of RP/negotiations before the hammer fell.

In that case, everyone involved agreed, it was great.

Yeah, I agree that can be the case, but it doesn't have to be the case all of the time, surely. There are times and situations, where talking for an extended time just isn't really appropriate. Like having an enemy attacking your allies' NPCs right under your nose. To ignore that is surely as bad as attacking with no RP what-so-ever?

I think it was fine in this specific situation. However it is in a grey area. There was RP, and it was imho made very clear that there was going to be a fight.
But: Remember many players here arn't native english speakers/have problems with the language. That isn't something bad, as long as they are trying to get along with others regardless. But these people might have problems/need some more time to understand that there will be a fight from what you have said, so an easy to understand warning might be in the sense of fair play.
Of course, this doesn't seem to apply in this specific situation.

It was definetely better that the habit of many people of dropping a Screamer/Pulse shell right into your face, shout engaging followed by a SNAC/Razor salvo.

If these guys want to sit inside hostile space, shooting down transports and then complain because they didn't get the abridged text of "War and Peace" in roleplay from a sworn enemy, then perhaps they should try doing something different. Sounds like sour grapes. Discovery is a violent place, sometimes.

The rules require role-play before PvP. It's not a rule for people to hide behind when things don't go their way.
