Seeing as the some shiplines have historically (ruleswise) been filling in a large gap in the market, perhaps we could contemplate simply replicating versions of ships like the gunship and orca or indeed several other military ships, as decommissioned ships, with new infocards and maybe modified stats to make them slightly inferior - but not too inferior. Even new skins to make them appear a little more worn.

Also, as factions get new ships, they could easily ditch ships. e.g. the Hammerhead should be decommissioned by now, and replaced by the Manta, so the HH becomes available on the merc market. This would simply require a new infocard on ships reflecting that it is being phased out of service and often ends up on the black market/civilian market/corporate market as a result.

Thoughts?

/signed like 9000 times.

my only issue, Is that if that they are inferior in any way, the mercs OORPly grab the better one. Unless its Like, MM, Corp mercs, ETC

Possibly. But that shouldnt prevent us from trying to make something both realistic and fair.

Currently we need more merc available ships. but mercs with orcas? um... i think i speak for many when i say we would rather get rid of the crap homeworld imports first.

Civilian gunship- cut the cargo pods off a Train, add turrets. This has been suggested somewhere before, seemed likely in the Freelancer universe.

Perhaps mk1 fighters could be buffed to the "slightly inferior" level. They might see use, then.

I'd like there to be a civ boat with a forward gun... never flown one but I'd like to.

I strongly support what you're suggesting at any rate.

I like it. We've got so many people flying ships that, in RP, ought to be restricted to only a few certain groups of people. This might appeal to those people, who get to fly a version of that ship and have it make sense in RP.

I can think of a few examples, actually. Not exactly what you're talking about, but the idea of recommissioned ships, I mean. The Raba, for instance, is an old re-purposed Corsair Gunboat model.

We could use more of this.

While I like this idea, allow me to play devil's advocate.

Is this really worth the extra space in an already staggeringly large mod? Creating new (sorry, old) versions of already existant ships?

What's to prevent (short of throwing something in the tech chart or adding another rule) people from just going for the superior 'new' ships? It seems that this could promote people not as interested in RP beating up on people who do RP.

This is a good idea.

Too many ships in the mode are useless.

They should be beefed up a bit, made into less exclusive models and available on the open market.

Then I would not have to bribe people....

I think expanding the Merc line is a great idea, just not in the manner which you described. I'd rather see more ships like the Kingfisher, Havok II, Tigershark, and Wasupu. These ships are all designed for Mercs as civilian ships. We don't have enough niche ships like that. What we could use is something like a civilian Bretonia VHF and a Rheinland Civie Bomber and such things. I rather like that idea more than decommissioned military equipment.
