I keep the Discovery FL server constantly online these days, but number of online players has significantly decreased. Hosting the server on my home PC may cause significant lag, and lag is probably the main reason why server activities declined. Correct me if I'm wrong. Number of people online has never exceeded 5 during the recent week, as far as I remember, and most of the time there are 2, 1, or 0 people online.

Hosting of the server on a dedicated machine, like 1-2 months before, is now impossible due to crashes. As my internet connection is not going to improve in the near future, I suppose the only possible solution for the Discovery server to survive is to be hosted by someone else.

What's actually required to host the server?

1) Hardware - the server will eat up 10-70% of CPU time depending on the number of players. However, according to my experience with Athlon 3000 (Socket-A), even with 10 people online you'll still be able to play Freelancer and other games or watch movies for example, it won't harm server performance alot. RAM - up to 100 Mb of free RAM is required.

2) PC should be on all the time or most of the day. You may restart it of course, but in peak hours I won't recommend restarting if it's not really needed.

3) Network connection. Bandwidth is not the most important thing, reliability is much more important. Ping is important too.

It's not easy to understand what you said. What do you mean? You are going to get a new PC?

Server software is no problem if you suit the requirements that I've posted. I'll explain everything about the server.

i have a dedicated internet server that i could easy put freelancer on i use it for serving ftp's and stuff but i would need a aproxmite downloads a month coz the second i hit 10 gig in uploads my connection gets cut to 56k..

otherwise i got i sever sitting here doing nutting other then serving some files so i can get to them at work.

the only isshuee for me would be how much a month it would take.....

my only concern is that in periods between about 2 to 5 pm my time my connectionslows down. a fiar bit coz im on cable, and calbe speed is relative to the number of useres online running of the cable hub

like at my night time (america day time.) its resonably fast (when i actually stay up that late) but right after school here whene the hub is chockers it dose slow down a little.

Is it a Windows server? If yes, than it's possible. And specify what CPU/RAM the server has.

Freelancer doesn't require much traffic, last month I had less than 200 Mb per week traffic. With many people online it will be more, but I doubt if our server traffic could exceed 2 Gb/month.

Edit: looked it up. It was even less than 150 Mb/week in October when we had lots of people online, so most probably total traffic will be less than 1 Gb/month.

Windows XP (preferably SP2) and Windows 2003. Others are no good for Freelancer server host.

Minimum system requirements: 1 GHz CPU, 256 Mb of RAM (if it's dedicated);
2 GHz CPU, 700 Mb of RAM (if it's your home and you are planning to use it for other tasks).

Well i can still host if you like, ive already got Ioncross, and FLMM, and i don't really need to play if you all need a server. But sounds like jade has a decent Server with him.
