How to make official factions better?

The admin team want official factions to:
A) Make 'role-play and rules challenged' players better.
B) Provide as stable a foundation for development of good times, in particular by showing and supporting great role play.
C) Provide a flexible platform for group fun and individual fun to encourage participation by all. There are multiple aspects to this: demonstrating that fair play works, dragging indes into the factions because it is more fun, ...

This is what official factions give to us - or at least ideally what they give to us. What other things should official factions do?

In return for these things and due to the effort official factions must put in to both become official and maintain their status, what should we give back? Factions have several official rights but these are not really that rewarding.

We are hoping to implement at least some of the ideas posted in this thread.

Perhaps some sort of monetary reward for good conduct over a period of time?

I think what it boils down to is this: "Why should I join a player faction? I can do everything they can do, and not have to 'work up through the ranks'."

And I'd hope that any suggestions offered add to what factions can do, without taking anything away from non-faction players.

Perhaps some form of 'wage' for activity, such as 500,000 credits for spending ten hours on your faction character, that is if it's a character that would get wages.

If this can somehow be recorded and proven, then perhaps Factions can get 'Grants' from the 'Government' (Admins).

Good?

Im thinking re-implamenting the old faction right #5 would be a good idea, as it seems there has been a recent increase in the number of RP challenged people on the server, many of whom are turning to capital ships for their power and as a 'status symbol'.

I think that making it so as capital ships would only be usable as a member of an official faction, or with very high standards of RP as an indy would not only give another incentive to join official factions, but improve RP quality in general (indies seeing they have to RP well to get that nice big shiny cap ship would most likely lead to a lot of quality RP from them in persuit of such).

No. Just no.
Official factions have too much power at the moment, seriously.
Not all indy cap ships are that bad.
Why don't you just put higher sanctions on caps and be done with it?

Just throwing an idea out there I've partially thieved from I-have-no-clue-who.

Changing cap licenses;
-To enter certain (rare) bases, you'll need to be friendly with the guard faction
-There is no way of becoming friendly with the guard faction aside from the faction's official faction approving it. Eg, like Nomads, Wilde, Phantoms, Administrators, etc, your rep to them doesn't change further to neutral in this case (should be possible right?)
-There's some thread stating who the indies are with permission to fly a capship
-Those player names are made friendly to the guard faction by the admins (once a day, once a week, whatever), at the official faction's sole digression
-Other players are only neutral to the guard faction (possible right?) and hence unable to purchase a cap ship (possible?) or a cap license (possible?)
It'd then be up to the official faction to post once a day/week/whatever who needs to get friendly with the guard faction (or lose their capship if neccesary)

That way, work for admins would be minimal, eg one admin checking the thread and doing the repping once a day/week/whatever, is all.

Basically official faction leadership deciding who gets to fly capships, possibly with some variable to turn it off server-side or something, for other servers.

In a nutshell, bye-bye to all lolcaps.

...Input?

EDIT: Note, indies would also be able to have caps, but ones approved by the official faction leadership with the sole requirement being able to RP well & having been around for more than a week.

I wouldn't want money. That's something we can earn. Besides, factions that are filled with at least 1/3 of decent people have their treasury up.

What I would like is that you deny people buying of faction ID unless they're in the faction.

If they want to be independent let them buy independent ID. If they have disagreement with how is faction run, let them form their own provided they have people and whatnot.
how's that?

I'll add a couple of the random ideas we've argued about over the last 12 months:
- restrict capship purchases to factions (enforced by admins in some manner)
- as above but only for the very biggest capships
- restrict access to bases (through some sort of flhook thing I guess), i.e. LPI locking down Manhattan.
- post in game news items
- allow factions to have one/some custom ships

That's all I can remember right now; I'll post others as I remember them

Many of these do have the problem in that they take something away from existing players. This isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself but it would hurt a number of players. We'd want to be very sure the advantages out weigh the disadvantages.

I'll say this, Matt, that it would be delicious to be able to /lockdown Manhattan <name>
