I think it would be cool to be able to buy NPC pilots be them light fighter to heavy fighters and if attacked by a rheinland bomber you can have them spawn and attack. I also thought it would be cool if it was possible to have players land on player owned cap ships that way a squad could dock on a cap ship and all travel together to a target.
Well, its not exactly like what you wanted, but Freeworlds released something called the Kamikaze launcher, which would launch smaller versions of ships (IE TIE fighters) that would crash into other ships. (These kamikazes were treated like missles.) Think that might be intresting...
ooc: actually, player docking is possible (I THINK), but very buggy. Also, it crashes the server if someone's docked on a player ship and the ship crashes/logs off/loses connection/otherwise is not online/dies.

annother game which has that kind of wing structre though, is "X3 Reunion". if you really want it, chek that out.
I've seen it done, but its much too confusing. It was used in another mod (I don't remember which one) to replace the mine dropper and your ship and it would spawn an NPC fighter of the proper designation. You could only carry three and they were @#$%ing expensive.
Still, its something I don't really want to see in discovery.
Yes player docking can be done, they managed it on Hamburg City server and the dev team have been playing around with it for the next freeworld release but it is very buggy.
Also to ad to what Yuri Neova said about the freeworld kami (ships/missiles), this actually got expanded on in freeworlds version 1.66, you could buy wing men at the base, there would be 4 figters flying in formation with you everywhere you went and when anyone hostile to you came on your scanners they would engage, thay would stay with you untill they got destroyed, pretty cool.
What if their number was variable, depending on the ship you'd be flying at that moment? 1 for fighter, 4 for GB/cruiser, 8/ BS and (!) 16 or more per carrier-like. Then - Carriers could actually rely primarily on their fighter wing, not just the guns. The liberty carrier, battlestars, Outcast dreadnought, BH battleship, hell, even the Outcast destroyer has a docking bay. the thing is: the NPCs attack what they see red, and not always the player's target appears red to him.
Worth a deeper thought, since the possible benefits might be truly monumental.
Well this could make Carriers practical....giving BSs greater advantages over people. Allowing them to deploy high level NPCs against people and whatnot. This would be cool if it is done properly.
