This is another thread regarding the new ship models being made. This time, concerning the ship replacement issue.

I know that many ships that were inserted into Discovery are from other sci-fi universes, many don't fit in perfectly. However, for each of those ships I had to receive modeller's permission, for each ship had to add dozens of hardpoints, and spent hours customizing the code. Moreover, the ships that were in the mod for a long time - like Spyglass, or Outcast Destroyer - are already familiar to many players as Freelancer faction ships, not Star Wars ships they were modelled from.

Replacing the ships means losing the model, losing the work I've done on it, and necessity to adapt the new ship's hardpoints for old setup (which is not always possible, hence I won't be able to remove the old ship from the mod anyway). There's nothing good in that, and I'd prefer to avoid replacing any ships that Discovery already has - without a very special need. Is there any special need right now? I don't think so (except for one ship maybe, see below).

This doesn't mean that new models should not be developed. Even for factions like Lane Hackers, there might be a place for "Spyglass II" - first one was stolen and is considered to be unique, second is a smaller, more agile ship that Lane Hackers build themselves. If the faction will be willing to, it's even possible to place the Spyglass on the admin base where no one could buy it - but not totally remove it from the game. Users who bought it before will still use it, and there isn't much what could be done about that.

Conclusion: don't be anxious about replacing.

P.S. Only model that might need actual replacing is the Rogue Gunboat - but no one ever suggested a new model for that one.

Feedbacks and opinions welcome, as usual.

Putting ships out to pasture (ie only selling on admin base) every now and then is a cool idea if for no other reason than to give old-timers some peacock value. (the ships would probably become account mules, but whatever...)

Sorry to go slightly off topic. I have always wanted to see this ship modeled. The link below is the original concept art for the mule back when it was supposed to be a bigger ship. I have been trying to teach myself how to model with it but the complicated design is beyond my skill. (You may notice it has allot of subtle curves) If there is a modeler who can do it, It would make the perfect rouge gunboat.

What of the Liberty Battlecruiser? Frankly, it isn't quite beautiful, especially hitbox-wise... I'd provide models when I have time...

To be fair, I think a few ships are very out of place. In particular, I mean the Huntress. It just doesn't fit, in my opinion.

Igiss, why didn't you even expect to have your work going to waste when you created this mod? You're lucky this mod has such a large userbase, because there are some mods that fail after a while. And if a mod of this size failed then a lot of the work would go to waste.

I'm aware that people like the "unfreelancerish" models of faction ships, so I agree with your idea of having the new and old versions of each ship, so that way both you and the Discovery fans who try to make the game better by making their own ships are happy.

I think the huntress should be one of the ships that should be changed, it looks way out of place and people don't fly it because of its shape, pretty much all forward facing guns and its worse than some battleships for getting through asteroids.

There also needs to be some looking at what the Corsairs have against there Outcast counterparts.

They have a great cruiser we do not, they also have there own super battleship.

I think its a good idea to keep the old in though if new models are made, mk2s would give us more to choose from and your work wouldn't go to the way side.
