The following should be read in a Vincent Price voice, per
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwHyfANiVXs
:

I have met the enemy, and his name is Ping.
At first I thought perhaps that it was just some insane new combat tactic of those wily Xenos that made them jink and jump and disappear from view.
Rogue Bloodhounds seemed to present no problem, but they always tend to fly lazily about as if begging me to space them.
Corsair Legionnaires...well after around 10 engagements I have managed to splash one...and given up in frustration on all the rest.
Bounty Hunter Piranhas seem to be the best foe so far- they attack with fervor, and their tendency to fly straight away, spin around, and then play chicken simplifies targeting.
I started out with plasma guns, but attempting to aim one shot at a time proved useless since the target was gone before the neurological signal to fire left my brain to travel to my trigger finger.
Photon guns improved somewhat.
Missiles seem to be a waste of ammo. Even dead-on, head-on shots that should be virtually inescapable just fly harmlessly past, or detonate behind the target causing no discernible damage.
So I tried the Bluebell Chain Gun, hoping that a super fast refire rate could at least place some shots where I want them. They do, but the energy drain is a killer on my current ship (Defender) and the amount of damage done is very small per hit. What a pretty light show though!
I thought that shield recharge and nanobots for NPCs was great, but I have found that it is turning 2 minute dogfights into 10 minute dogfights - with the same single target.

I invited Ping to sit down over a Sidewinder Fang and discuss this like men.
Ping scoffed at me and told me to do something solitary that I don't think is possible even with the help of three Cardamine-doped Outcasts.

I cannot kill Ping. I cannot hurl Ping into the depths of the Omega 41 Neutron Star. I cannot banish Ping to the furthest reaches of space where only Corsairs fly. I cannot weep at Ping because he only heaps on more scorn. I cannot curse Ping because that will violate my ethics. I cannot bribe Ping; or run or hide from Ping. In short, Ping is life, and life is Ping.
I have to live with this voracious parasite, Ping.

But what, oh what, weapons should I use to shoot at ships possessed by Ping (may his name be blotted out!)?

I know a prototype being developed in the houses secretly... it's codename is "FASTER CONNECTION"!

But it could also be that some cheater or hacker got in, though this would result in a crash anyway. However, I have no idea...

I have done a little searching for programs or utilities that might speed up my fiber optic connection. A lot of what I am reading is beyond my level of understanding about computers. Is anyone using any kind of software (preferably free, Ha ha) that helps with their ping?

Might changing my in game performance settings accomplish anything with regards to the server connection?

I have a pretty darn fast connection, but I still have around 200 ping to the server. Reason: I'm in the western USA and the server is in Europe.:)

I think the only option for completely solving the problem is to move back to the Old Continent.

As far as advice for fighting with it... good luck. PvP is pretty much suicide for me, so I tend to run a lot. Against NPCs, I just draw them into "chicken" matches and get them to charge straight at me. Assuming I have stronger shields and weapons, they lose.:)

Eris thinks you should focus on your Pineal.

Join the TAZ.. seek complete neutrality, be bored out of your pants trading and harrassing cabbages, and never fire a shot.

That's how I dealt with a 1500+ ping satellite connection on a ranch in New Mexico for awhile.

It still works, even though my ping has improved greatly.

Eris knows Ping personally. They get small together.

Cheers,

Mal

Xoria, welcome to the world of multiplayer dude! Unless your lucky enough to sit next to the server........

Corsairs & Outcasts are definitely the worst, in their buzzy little light fighters, not least coz they use all their bats&bots quickly. Oh yeah and save your money, don't buy missiles.

I have 300 ping lately, when i usually should have 80-120.
dont know why but the server seems to lag (other servers give me good pings).

I have to deal with a 450 - 550 average ping... South Africa, I know.

As I understand it, your connection speed only has so much influence. The biggest is the amount of times your connection has to jump (from server to server) to it's destination and back. In my case it jumps about... 7 times there and 7 times back.

Not even mentioning how busy my and all these other servers are... I could be wrong...

Well, I have a 600kbps connection and my ping is usually 280-320, is really hard to pvp with that (in great battles is horrible), but i still try, and kill some people. U will get familiar with Lag.

I am from Brazil, lol.
