Imagine a freighter.

Make it 1.5 times bigger and put on a light gunboat power core. Then give it special gunboat flak cannons and super gunboat solarises (same movement stats as BS solarises but with reduced damage, reduced power drain and increased refire).

And presto we have an anti fighter/bomber killing machine designed to escort Battleships! It's balanced because godly bomber pilots will be able to kill it with two shots and gunboats can laugh at it's anti fighter weaponry.

I have flame resistance +60% so I'm good.

Gunboat > lone fighter or bomber, or two fighters that aren't very well trained (read: fighters that don't know how to use their CDs).

This thing will still lose to three fighters or two bombers. So do gunboats.

I just don't see it being any more useful against fighters/bombers, just weaker vs transports and other GBs.

No it won't. It would be like turbo death machine to any fighter that comes in range. Like if you can keep a bead on a fighter for a second (a whole second) it will die sort of thing.

Your idea seems to have a few holes in it. Your first idea is to have a light gunboat using special solaris with reduced damage and increased refire, but in your last post you said that it can kill a fighter in one second. Taking an AU 8 fighter out in 1 second would require you to do ~50,000 (doubling shield to cancel out the halved shield damage) damage, and from 6 turrets (I doubt you could logically fit more on a ship of the size you're talking about), this would require a damage output of 8,333 per turret per second, which is greater than the damage output of battleship solarises, at 6000 per turret per second. Comparing this to the zoner gunboat turret at 3400 damage per second, you can see that this new freighter-escort ship would be horribly overpowered, and tear up gunboats and fighters easily.

Secondly, what weapons class would you assign to these turrets? If you choose class 8, any gunboat could use them and you'd end up with unavoidable lolboats with more than twice the power they used to have and a much larger power core than you'd anticipated. If it's class 9 or 10 then you get battleships and cruisers substituting their solarises for the new "Uber-solarises" which you're proposing.

You make a damn fine point, my idea is foiled. Admins can close this, I didn't give enough thought to my idea.
