Names, Namestealing, etc.

[Carlos_Benitez]

Tonight I encountered 2 players, both abusing some Benitez names. I enclose screenshots.



Normally I wouldn't be too bothered, except for that 1 of them is in Gamma, behaving and RPing as a Corsair, and effectively rubbing his name in my face.

To go through and explain...Carlos is my name, its what I am known as on the server, and if you where to strip away my "Corsairs-" and my "_Benitez" tags, there would be nothing left but "Carlos".

Jose_Carlos is more worrying, as it is an amalgamation of 2 names of high ranking Benitez members. Hanging around in Gamma, this one could easily confuse people into thinking that he is a shared account between me, and my 5th in command.

They hide behind the defence that "its not exactly the same, so its fine". When someone has 6 or so accounts with different permutations of the same name; "Carlos", or "Jose", this is the kind of thing that upsets them.

This is an RP server, which should surely mean that individuality and distinction between names is more important here, than anywhere else.

Jose Carlos is actually a very common name in Portugal and Brazil, and Ze is the diminutive form of Jose so i guess they are the same person.

Carlos is a fairly common name, as long as they aren't using the player faction tag, there's nothing you can do about it. Bulldognk once said that as long as they aren't using your exact name, then there's nothing that will be done. He even said 'Bulldog' would be an acceptable name for a player, as long as they leave off the 'nk' at the end.

Bottom line is that Disco is a big universe, and some names will be used by many different people... I made my first character (Drake) before I knew there was another, rather famous Drake on the server. Has never really been a problem for either of us.

"Carlos" is either registered trademark or trademark of Benitez Family in the Omicron Gamma and/or other systems.

In other words: you don't own a common name like that own. It's not your property. Has it been a character who uses your faction tag - that could have been a problem, but not until then.

Carlos, if you are going to talk about your "Carlos" then ill start about my Gabriel.
You, the Benitez, have a corsair player called " Gabriel_Carranza_Benitez" or summut like that. While my NovaPG guy, SIC, is called Joshua"Gabriel"Dejesus. Do i complain? No, i do not.

In other words, its just a name! No name is unique.
