My name is E. My callsign is Summoner. You don't know me yet.
I started playing on this server last week. I've finished the single player campaign twice, but this is my first online Freelance experience. I wanted to try this server because I really enjoy Freelancer, even if it is an old game. It's better than any of the other online space combat games, like EVE or SW:G.
However, since joining this server, I feel like I've had nothing but bad experiences.
First, a glitch in the docking system killed me REPEATEDLY, not to mention that collision damage is much higher than I was used to from SP.
Granted, this is a problem with the MOD, not the PLAYERS. I'm afraid I can't say the same for my next points.
Fed up with the glitch problems, and not liking the way my character was going, I decided to start over with a new callsign, Archangel. I spent about five hours trying to raise my rep with pirate factions so that I could do a specific profitable trade run without getting killed by NPCs.
With that accomplished, I started on the trade run and was promptly newbie killed. Yep. Ganked. Just like World of Warcraft. How lame can you get?
Five minutes later while still VERY upset, I got chewed out by someone for stealing his name. While I am sorry for taking his name, he was very abrasive and condescending about it. You see, I thought that the server would reject a name if someone else already had the same one. You know, like EVERY OTHER ONLINE GAME. So considering I had JUST started over and did not want to do so again, this guy, while in the right, was also not very understanding.
I've seen other new players get similar treatment. Just the other day, two separate new pilots were told not to play online before completing the single player campaign. Is that really the image you guys want to project? Shouldn't there be somewhere a new player can learn to fly without spending 15-20 hours on the SP campaign?
The impression I keep getting from watching conversations of long time players is that there is this idea that "We've been here forever, so we're better than you." Not cool. An attitude like this will scare off new players. Scaring off new players means your server will eventually dwindle and die. I don't think that's what you want.
I know. You guys don't know who I am. You don't respect me. I realize that. But still, just think about your attitude toward new players. Really think about it. And don't newbie kill.
First of all, Archangel, welcome to Discovery. The mod can really be though at the beginning. With NPCs using nanos and batts and an improved flying style, it's hard. I'm a new player myself and I was fortunate to have some friends start together which made things a little easier for me.
Starting alone here must be real hard, not only the game is made more difficult by the mod, but the community is really strong and protective of the server. I know some of the guys here can be harsh and sometimes forget how it was to start here. I hope you can take it as a measure of their appreciation for this place and from that figure how Disco can be fun. Take it as them trying to protect something they really like.
I know there's no excuse for treating someone badly. Also I know from my own experience that if you come here with a humble attitude, which I think is proper to anyone that's new anywhere, most here can and will be very receptive. At least that's what happened to me.
I'd also ask you to consider the amount of new players that come here to do nothing but to disrupt the gameplay. Not that I'm saying this is your particular case, but do forgive us if sometimes we can be somewhat short tempered, our bad. Have a little patience with us.
I don't really know what happened to you and I usually don't take sides unless I know the whole story. So, please take my words as a proper introduction to Disco. Be patient, be humble, ask for help whenever you need it, don't take crap from people, but react in a conciliatory fashion, visit the forums, not only know the game, but also know the server, it's factions, it's people etc.
I think that if you give it another chance you can really enjoy playing here. Welcome again.
There is a rule against killing newbies, (people under level 30)... if you were killed you were probably killed by a newbie himself... or by someone who broke the law...
I had a much diffrent experience when i first came to RP server, afther some LSF pilots accidently shot me down, they appologized and repaid me all dammage and some considerable extras...
It's a real shame that you have a bad beginning experience. I'm sure that if you ask some of the older players they will let you in on plenty of useful secrets. If you ever findyourself ingame, you can call on me, for a hand with starting yourself up,... (look at my signature for names of my players)...
Good luck!

I think the reason people say do SP first is twofold.
1) once you download Disco SP becomes very difficult (and I hear there is a bug in the higher levels which makes it uncompletable...)
2) Nobody here wants to have to teach everyone how to dock, and to use free-flight, and how to take a mission, ect. So whenever I bring someone new in I tell them to play through the first couple of missions (the turorials) so that they know the basic controls.
As for the newbie kill.... if they were Keeper or Phantom they are terrorists (but if you were under level-30 I don't think they can touch you) that can kill everyone. If its a pirate that demanded a tax that you don't pay they can kill you. If it wasn't a terrorist and a pirate never asked for a tax you should report them.
The collision thing is because the game doesn't register mass so if a fighter were to hit a capship they both spin the same amount, so the developers had to do something to prevent the abuse of ramming. And its more realistic IMO
The docking thing........
In any case, welcome to disco. If you need a hand contact Victor_Remond in game.
Being an old-newbie, let me say welcome and don't let the anal-retentive spoil your fun. Play your game not others. Stick to the rules and you shall not go wrong. If ever in need, just holler at me. My main characters are below and I have a trader along the lines of my forum handle.
Archangel. Welcome to the server.
Whilst I dont really undertand your docking problems, I hope to shed some light on the player stuff.
It is illegal for a player over Level 30 to kill a player under level 30. If this happens, take screenshots and send them to the admins. They will be dealt with.
If you where killed by players under Level 30, chances are, they are noobs and not representative of the majority of the community here. If they are over level 30, they're breaking laws.
Also, understand that here, RP is what its all about, and anything said in character (without "((" or //" before it) is not personal.
I recommend you don't take anything too seriously. Getting killed isn't something to worry about, as long as it was lawful and agreeable with roleplay.
Regarding playing the single player, I do reccomend it to new players, but never say they shouldnt be playing here if they dont... The singleplayer provides a basis for learing how the game works. It takes many many hours of training for people to learn how to play freelancer, then play on multiplayer, then roleplay, then learn how to PVP well, then know their way around, then get to know the server... its all a learning curve that takes most people many months.
Single player allows allot of this to be done in a relatively short time. Please note that many of us have played for hundreds and hundreds of hours. A couple of hours on the singleplayer campaign seems like nothing to us.
My advice is, get to know the rules, be ready to report anyone who isnt following them, and dive into the roleplay. Perhaps join a clan, but for gods sake, get out of the Civillian ID.. because your game will improve 1000 fold when you do.
IDs are EVERYTHING here. If, say, your a Police ID player, and you get killed by a Liberty Rogue, you know why he did it, you know it's all in good fun, and you know its nothing personal. The sooner you are able to pick a role, the better.
As for the newbie kill, I did read all the server rules before starting. I already reported him and I think the admins are working on it. The admins are working on the same name problem, too, and I'm grateful for that.
I would like to reiterate that I was not trying to whine or vent. I just had a very bad starting experience and I wanted others to be aware of it so it wouldn't be repeated with other new players.
Honestly, whoever newbie-killed you, send me the name and I'll put a Bounty on the arse's head. Not nice, at all. Second, the collision damage is higher because people were using ramming to knock Capital Ships out of firing position; basically, you just have to learn to fly quite a bit differently than you were used to during Single Player. I suggest talking to the Queen Carina's Own, they're a Bretonian faction which offers excellent pilot training. Third, the name thing...I happen to know the guy who's name you used (quite unknowingly, I'm sure), and it's actually a fairly well-known Liberty Dreadnought, probably the best one on the server right now. While admittedly he shouldn't have gone after you for it nearly as hard as he did, it would have been easier probably to just get a new callsign...you can establish some RP and a real character after you get your feet off the ground. So, anyways, talk to the QCO, they'll hook you up, assuming you can Roleplay, which I think you can, judging from the quality of your post.

Yeah as everyone said the newbie killing is just wrong and I'm sorry you had bad experinces. Trust me there are plenty of good nice players out there. We also hve our percentage of lets just say "arrogant, holier than thou bell-end's" who will try to ruin your experience because thats how they get their kicks. If you need any assistance I am online far more than is healthy so just PM me and I will try to help if I am not busy being shot at by the latest Corsair Cruiser that thinks New York is his stomping ground :D
A guy came on-line last night in New York, level 5 newbie and asked a couple of questions and just about everybody in New York pounced on him! It was so sad I had to break my RP to say welcome to the server and point him in the direction of the forums and the rules and tell everyone to say hello to the poor guy. Not a good welcome at all guys.
Archangel:)You`re not new on this server:)you play here for a long time. You`re a chieneese guy that study in Canada. I even know your name:)
Good like mate!
P.S. Thx for good battle today.
