Hey guys, do you guys know a game thats simular to FL?

The games I'd like to know more about are the X series, Darkstar One, or anything a kin.

I've tried X2, it seems EPIC to say the least, but the controls were VERY unpolished, sometimes I'd just crash while docking. Doesn't seem to support online play either.

what you d like to try is < i-war > and < i-war 2 > ... they are more simulations. one ship, one crew - an OK story and quite a good balancing. ( and they both run on old computers, too )

then there is < elite frontier > very much about realism when it comes to stats - but its utterly ugly by todays standards ( anyway - i think its freeware now )

an interesting project was the game < battlecruiser 3000 ad > or something like that. but i think it was extremely bugged. it had the ambition to simulate a real space battlecruiser - that means, with crew, support craft etc, more a manager than a shooter of course.

That was really nice game... I have it somewhere on 3 CD... it was bugged like hell... and graphics were up to 1996 or 98 ? standart. But you could fly either the battlecruiser or a fighter (it had 3) or a ground vehicle!

If you are looking for fighting only... Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 is the best. It is now available for download for free - source code project. Definitely worth the shot if you have not played it before.

doh, yea - freespace 1-2, i consider it so much the very BEST balanced space sim , that i forgot to mention it:laugh:... yea, but if you play freespace, i advice you to download the open source, too - it ll improve the graphics ( which are allready quite nice, a tad better than FL - but awesome for its age ) by some new dx effects, such as bumpmapping, simple mapping, vertex shaders etc .... ( sounds nice, uh? - but to be honest, you won t see much of it ingame, cause its not exactly a "slow" game )

anyway, freespace has the most amazing fighter vs. capital ship fights i know and a very very fair gameplay ( just the AI ships aren t too smart, they fly similar manouvers to freelancer AIs - but at least they know how to use their missiles, which in freespace REALLY hurt - you get a good idea of bomber / fighter balance there, too hehe )

If you feel like wasting your time a lot by drooling all over your keyboard trying to understand it, you can try X3: Reunion, I suggest you read the manual and hit the guides on the forum though. Very complex game but can be rewarding when you get used to it.

I'm curious myself about Darkstar One

Battlecruiser Millineum evolved into 'Universal Combat' & was (or is) a very cool experiment.

The creator tried to sew the arm of an FPS onto the head of a space-sim, & the instruction book is like 200 pages.

It gave you the ability to land your shilp on planets in various areas & then switch to 'first-person' to do the killing thing

The attempted 'realisim' of space travel was cool too...& to this day, I have fantasys about someone making a mod like that for FL'er once we get our grubby hands on the source code.
(I drool everytime I imagine switching to 1st-person after docking anywhere in Sirius)

Ultimately though, it drove me here

X3:R is a BEAUTIFUL game, & again, I drooled...this time collecting into a puddle that I slipped on & almost aquired a concussion...then I tried to figure out how to maneuver.

After only 2 days, it drove me back here after a 5-month disapearance.

That leaves DS1...when I get around to checking it out, I wonder how long it will take for it to drive me back here.:)

I played Tachyon: The Fringe before Ifound FL. The game is a lot smaller, but the story line is long, excelent, and interesting.

I've played X2 and it was OK, the fact that you could build your own factories and hire trade ships + figters was cool, but it is really a very short game in the sense that once you earn a decent amount of money you don't have anything to do.

Battlecruiser + Universal Combat - I haven't actually played those two (installed Battlecruiser 3K a long time ago but couldn't figure how to play the damn game) but I heard a lot of bad stuff about them, especially that they are hard to get hang of and also very buggy.

Freespace 2 is probably the best fighter space sim I've ever seen. You don't have the trading part in the game but the fighting part rocks! The new community-improved open source version has some pretty cool graphics (my computer is some 3-4 years old so it won't handle most of the eye-candy but the bits I saw were pretty damn cool). It seems to be reasonably realistic, the cap ships are huge (not like in Freelancer) and if you get hit by one of the cap ship beams, you are dead meat. You can damage ship subsystems so you could for example take out your enemy's engines and he won't be able to move anymore, or you can destroy individual turrets on battleships, and so on. Oh, and the singleplayer campaign is very nice.

(Yeah, I really like that game.:))

i have X3 and have tried playing it a couple of times. but the gliches in the graphics made me lag too bad to even play it. i was told of a fix for it by turning off antialiasing but have yet to try it. it has a lot of promise if i can ever get it to run correctly

tachyon is a cool game...bruce campbell roolz!

Not quite sure about the "buggy" issue in the older battle cruisers, but the millennium version seems to work ok, it just requires ALOT of reading the manual and it is no Freelancer. http://www.bc3000ad.com/downloads/
In my opinion, I don't know of any game out there that is like FL. There are a lot of great games out there, but none that I feel have that unique style that Freelancer has....
