well, i was reading the newspaper on my way to school, and i read something that i thought would be a nice addition to the Disco world, if thats possible.
Quote:How a star becomes a supernova:
1. Stars are mostly big balls of Hydrogen and Helium. Hydrogen is burned within the stars core in fusion reactions. Towards the end of the stars life, its hydrogen supplies start to deplete, and the star begins to collapse under the weight of its own gravity
2. As the star contracts, it rises in temperature until helium fusion begins within the core. The energy released by this reaction causes the hydrogen left over in the stars outer layers to burn. This causes the star to cool up and expand-by up to 200 times- to become a RED GIANT.
3. If the star is particularly large, reactions within the core begin to cascade, producing progressively heavier elements- helium if fused into carbon and oxygen, oxygen into neon, sodium and magnesium, until ultimately, iron is created.
4. Iron fusion uses more energy than it releases, meaning that the nuclear reactions can no longer support the star, causing the star to rapidly collapse. Eventually, the expanding iron core collides with the collapsing gases and the star explodes into a supernova
5. Supernovae play a crucial role in the formation of new stars. Almost all the elements of the universe heavier than hydrogen and helium are created in the canters of stars during their lifetime, or in supernovae explosions. Either way, supernovae disperse this material allowing a new generation of stars to form.
this is a passage from the news clip i am reffering to. for some reason, i cant see the news clipping on the internet on the metro website (people in UK know what metro is ie: free newspaper u get on the buses:P)
anyway, my point i wanted to say was, last time i saw the sun in Omicron Kappa (or was it delta? the red sun in the corner)it says its a red giant when selected. i was thinking, is it possible to remove that sun, to include a supernova in the early stages? yes, i know making a supernova will be pretty hard, but i got the idea when i confirmed with mike (exile) if the black hole in 85 was modded, or was it already present in vanilla. when he replied that nightfall made it from scratch, i thought maybe this could also be possible? it would be quite a good addition to the system..
this picture shows what a supernova looks like when one dies:
this is a pic of a very bright supernova:
tis a supernova cluster:
another example of a supernova, in the distance:
now, your thoughts on the subject..?:)
((PS: i removed the post from mod ideas thread, cuz i just realised summat >.> anyway, discuss:D)
well, a bit more research showed me thatr there are 2 types of supernova occurences..
even while the birth of a supernova is an "explosion" - isn t it measured in millions of years? - so before it turned into a supernova, would it not burn everything to death in delta?
anyway, the delta red giant is now a decal ( no orbital at all anymore ) - guess that happend cause the red one caused problems. igiss mentioned something about some suns causing bugs with some computers.
i am all for "interesting" landmarks in systems. they add to the variety, so making it a supernova would be very nice. many systems could need something to look at. ( like omicron lost, which is quite nice - but offers nothing at all, no base, no planets to dock with, no wrecks and nothing to special at all ... i know its important for the singleplayer - but its a wasted system for multiplayer, sadly. )
so anomalies would be nice to have in a few systems, along with the effects or some effect. effects i could think of that may be possible...
- no cruise while in the area of effect
- radiation damage
- energy drain
- shield drain
an phenomenum without an effect would be rather boring. ( unless its so far away, that its really just a decal and not supposed to be closed up to )
well, i was thinking something along the lines of either the red giant getting brighter and brighter (like supernovae do. their brightness increases from 100 to 10000 when they are about to go boom apparently)
also, if you havent seen the black hole in omicron 85 jinx, try it once. it looks nice, plus, if you go too near it, you WILL go boom, even if you are in the biggest ship you can get ye hands on. as you go closer, there isnt noticeable damage, but suddenly radiation damage hits you, and before you can do anything, ure dead. not only does it look good for cosmetic purposes, it also doest do damage.
according to the article i was reading today, there is a star (close to our solar system) which apparently has been growing brighter (signs of a supernova in its earliest stage).
however, according to the scientists, they say that even if the star is near earth, it isnt that close enought to cause any potential, destructive harm (apparently, it needs to be about 30 mill light away or summat to have an adverse effect on eartch, and currently its about 100 mill light years away) [also, im not sure if its just 30 light years, or 30 mill. ill re-read the article on my way back home, and edit this post if i made a mistake]. the only effect it WILL have if it were to become a supernova is cause 6 months of insomnia for people in the southern hemisphere, cuz it will produce enough light to read in (according to article)
so, no. a supernova will not necessarily wipe out life. plus, the star in delta (the one in the corner) is actually quite far away, not in the normal patrol paths or anything. it is however a bit close to the omicron lost jumphole, so, if there is any potential problem, i think it would be this. but, there again, omicron lost is hardly ever used, so i dont see why anyone would want to go there as it is. the wreck near it dont hold anything useful either as it is, so i dont see a major loss, but there again, i guess its upto igiss to decide if
1. it can be done,
2. it will be included or not,
3. if lost would be affected.
EDIT: i was thinking, when i get home, ill put the whole article up, so that everyone can see what i was actualy talking about. makes it easier, so ill post it when i get home. stoopid Metro >.<
If you had a supernova anywhere within 1million kilometers of Delta, everyone would die. Not even that close. Remember that there are dozens of millions of kilometers between earth and our normal sun.. Mercury is about half as far away, but its sun side is practically on fire.. Thats a small yellow sun.. A supernova is about 200 times larger, as you read.. If our sun was a supernova, it'd have consumed the Earth by now.. You'd have to make it about 30 million kilometers away from Delta, which means it'd have to be about a million kilometers large at the smallest.. This way it wouldn't kill all life and burn the planets and stations in the system..
And for the record; Nightfall was our best system modder.. He could make the blackhole, which took him 2-3 months mind you, but I couldn't do it without fiddling with FLE for about a year, if I didn't already have Night's model to use as a reference point.. A supernova wouldn't take as long, but it would still take a long time of hard work, because if I were to make one, it wouldn't be half-assed.
well, we don t need "real" distances. i mean - the 3 suns of delta are only a few miles away from freeport 11. ( not to mention not much bigger than freeport 11 )
what i do like is recognizable system features throughout systems. there is that twin spiral nebula that you see in the southern omicrons - its farther away in omicron - 41 and closer in gamma. it gives the impression that you are actually really in one sector - and not switching from system to system with nothing more of a connection than the jumphole.
imo - a supernova could aswell just be "painted" on the starmap - and maybe maybe one day added as a big system. ( i don t know how big a single system can be - but newcastle is big alrlead - if a system was say - 4 times as big with a BIG and very nice looking anomaly in the middle, it would be a good spot for a heavily shielded research installation aswell as several wrecks. )
Isn't the sun in Omega-11 already undergoing the early stages of a supernova? If I remember correctly it says that the sun has consumed most of the planets in the system already.

1. this is not real life, its freelancer. some things CAN be exxagerated to a point dab.
2. Our sun right now is a long way from becoming a supernova, and even if it was to become a supernova, of-course we would be dead. never disagreed there.
3. plus, i re-read that article. says that you would need to be 30 light years away from the supernova to have any potential destructive damage on the earth, and 100 light years away to experience slight damage.
4. the black hole in 85 should rip corsica and anything else that is in the system apart, if everything was based on real life facts. black holes are formed DUE to super-novas, and thus are MUCH more destructive. how would you even survive in a system with a black hole, by being so close? this pretty much backs my statement that some things are exxagerated. its a game if you base EVERYTHING on real life, hell, you wont be able to do half the stuff we can.
5. all im asking is for the sun to be removed, and have a supernova to be added. Delta is a custom built system, and its quite nice, but hell, we all know a bit of distinction doesnt hurt.
(still finding the blooming article *grumble*. if i dont find it, ill type up the relevant passage of the article)
Id also like 2 point out that if it were real life, then those planets would be ALOT bigger!!! But, why not use an existing system that hasnt already got something in it... Ive seen Omi80, among MANY others in disco that are lifelss - no bases, no patrols, no nebula, nothing! Im not sure if any have a red giant in them or not, but it would be worth a look. Then, you wouldnt have to worry about all of those bases, etc. that would potentialy be affected.:)
Heightmeyer: "Can you tell me a little bit about your drawing?" McKay: "This is a diagram of one of the control panels we're going to have to reverse-engineer if we're to have the slightest prayer of getting me back into my own body before I hit puberty again." Heightmeyer: "I see, and what about this bit you sketched over here in the corner?" McKay: "That? That is a kitty cat."
