5.2 All attacks must be the result of some form of role play. "Engaging" is not sufficient. An attack is any hostile action that drains shields to less than 50%. Being hit with a CD is not considered an attack. If a player is attacked he has a right to defend himself regardless of who is attacking.
Someone please explain this to me, cause obviously I miss the rule.
As far as little ol me knows, if you shoot someone and drain their shields below 50 % it is considered an attack. The rule explanation also states that any attack needs to have been Role-played to a point, i.e. Halt! is not enough.
However, apparently that is wrong. And this is right.
"YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE MADE A DEMAND TO SHOOT AT A TRADER AS A PIRATE. ONLY IF YOU KILL HIM"
So, according to this, I can shoot and shoot some more and kill my intended target and then make a demand.
This rule needs to be rehashed cause it is causing major confusion. I thought my take was based on common sense but that was wrong and I have been told by a moderator to go re-read the rule. Which I have now done and I still don't get it. Yeah, stupid, silly old me.
' Wrote:No, you too misunderstand the rules regarding piracy. How many times does this have to be repeated? YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE MADE A DEMAND TO SHOOT AT A TRADER AS A PIRATE. ONLY IF YOU KILL HIM
' Wrote:Welll...those are two separate rules.
The pirate cannot ATTACK you without roleplay.
The pirate cannot DESTROY you without asking for money or cargo or a RP request.
Which means he kind of has to role-play before either of those ever come to pass. Which makes that a moot point. You cannot deplete a person's shield below 50 % without role-playing first. Which of course means you cannot kill a person before role-play as obviously to kill them you have to deplete their shield passed 50 % first.
This was hidden in the rules section, easy to miss amongst the rest of the stickied threads.
Ok, read the Larry trader section. So, you can role-play with anybody and once you have done that, you can start shooting until they have one slither of hull left and then make a demand before destroying them?

That was worse than your usual Dusty.
I'll also make a constructive addendum to this. One of the problems with this that once you've attacked the trader below 50% of his shield, he is now free to open fire on you WITHOUT roleplay. Which means, it is up to you, as the aggressor, to issue proper demand and await response all while being fired on incessantly by an angry trader.
This makes things complicated because the trader can claim self defense and on the same side, the pirate can claim that (if he took -50% shields damage) that he was engaged in a fight. The pirate's argument isn't really valid, but as I'm sure many pirates can attest to, it's damned frustrating to try and RP with a trader who is thrusting away as well as firing at you.
I won't even go into "outrageous" demands for terrorist factions such as Xenos, GC, Gains versus their respective "most hated group" transports. (edit: In relation to the pirate "issuing a demand" that is.)
