Since I've never used a graphics mod, I've been tempted to by some of the screenshots I've been seeing lately to install one for kicks. Though I'm paranoid that I'd get kicked or sanctioned for mod abuse or something.
So what can and can't we do with graphics mods?
While I'm here, what ones are legal and able to be used?
2.1 Following actions are considered cheating on server:
- Using non-Discovery mods, speed-related and loot-related mods especially, as well as using modifications that improve stats of items and ships;
- Changing account information and using any kinds of software that changes normal gameplay;
Rules wise, no. But I'm not sure about appearance enhancement modifications.
A lot of people use HUD mods out there nowadays and they seem acceptable by the admins, so as long as your graphics mods don't change too much of the game they should be okay. Again, this is only my opinion.
From a technical standpoint looking at the rule wording, graphics mods don't alter items or ships data as far as I know. Unless cockpit data is linked to each ship where you need to modify the ship data to link that cockpit to it... hmm.
Changing HUD icons shouldn't be a problem though,
Changing music shouldn't be an issue,
Changing background shouldn't be,
Changing general sounds shouldn't,
Changing missile trails and sounds shouldn't,
if you think something gives you an advantage it's not allowed.

Change the background so you can spot ships more easily.
Change the soundfiles to make missile sound more distinct and to recognize which one is being fired. (Different, more distinctive sound for a Nova, a Cannonball, a CD, etc).
i asked cannon ingame and he said don't do it, but i see many videos and screenshots with changed garffics and no1 realloy cares, it'd be good if someone made a mod aprouved by the admins and upload it
Most of the time the simple graphic mods, like changing the HUD's, aren't a big deal.
What IS a big deal is that some people have graphic mods that do things like remove asteroids from around bases. Then they can fly into where there should be a base and sit in it, shooting out.

That actually also works with /stuck on some bases.

Etc.
If I wanted to make that I could do it. But it can't play with a red background. I want everything on my personal FL copy to be 'almost realistic'.
I used graphical mods from April 2010, and I wasn't ever sanctioned or warned because of them. It's a user choice, depending on your current hardware. They don't affect in any kind the gameplay of the server, trust me.
