I haven't filed any sanction reports lately but I noticed people getting sanctioned for "threatening to report".

So what's the real dealio? Are you supposed to talk to them before hand or not? Personally I would prefer being talked to before someone files a report on me. I recently saw an example where someone was sanctioned for trying to talk it out with a guy in PM. Well that guy didn't respond and just sent those screenshots off instead and got him sanctioned. I knopw I don't see both sides of the story in that example.

So should you talk to people first or not?

No.
Never talk about sanctions in game. Just never. All that you say can be interpreted in a number of different ways and might get you sanctioned.
The only situation when you could PM someone to explain him what did he do wrong would be with ID/tech violations.
In all other situations, no matter how you phrase it, people will interpret it.

It's all about the tone and the way you talk to someone. You cannot threaten actions by the admins, but you can talk to someone. When someone swears at me, I send him a pm saying:

"Hi! I am inclined to inform you that cursing like that is a breach of the server rules. If you could refrain from doing so, I'd be much obliged."

There's no moment in that sentence where I invoke an admin's name or tell someone he will be banned or sanctioned. It is just talking to someone. It's a calm tone which wants to talk to someone. Much different from:

"You! The admins will ban you for swearing like that! I'm going to file a report unless you apologize!" which I've seen a bunch of times.

That is threatening. It names an admin. It threatens with a report. It's angry and uncalled for. This is what you should not do when talking to someone.

Talking to someone can often stop the problem before a report is needed. It's good. Do it. Just don't be threatening, angry, or otherwise malicious.

EDIT: I've talked to people like this for about two years and never have my words been interpreted in a way which has gotten me sanctioned.

^-- While I fill reports every now and then, I can confirm the statement above. It is indeed possible to tell people about their rule violations. However, if it doesn't work, don't push it. If the other guy doesn't want to listen to you, fill the report, simple as is. You tried to talk and as such you've done your duty.
Because if you get angry yourself about him not willing to understand, you are more likely to throw a line that can be interpreted in a bad way.

I tend to just inform the person that their actions/whatever could led them to being sanctioned and that I only mentioned it to them to prevent it from happening.

As to your question, trying to work it out with the player in question lightens the work load on the admins, just make sure you don't say it in a threatening way.

Basically, what he said yeh. Personally, I never fill a report before trying to talk to the person who broke a rule. Simply because, sometimes, they don't really intend to break a rule, or they don't even know it was there. Most of the time poeple will listen to you. Much better than going sactionlancer.

Also, here's the key thing.

If you tell someone that you're going to file a sanctionr report on them, then DO SO. Immediately. Do not wait until the next day. That way you didn't THREATEN them with a sanction report. You told them you were going to file a report, and you did so. Congratulations, you are now covered in case THEY file a report about you threatening them - you didn't threaten them, you merely stated your intentions.

I would definitely refrain from ever stating that you personally will file a sanction report. Really, saying you will file a report is threatening, and you may be sanctioned (maybe even by the report you file yourself). Saying something like "You may be sanctioned if you continue this behavior." or something similar may be acceptable, but refraining from using the word "Sanction" at all is recommended. The most important thing is to keep your tone completely calm and civil when trying to talk to someone.

I definitely agree with Ceoran. If someone swears at you, and then you talk to him and he just swears more, then there is really no point in talking to him. Just file a report at that point. Really that's the point where a report is necessary because if you are mild mannered enough to actually talk to someone and he is trying to make you angry, there will be someone else on the server he will seriously make angry which may turn into something bad.

It depends on your mood I guess. If you feel like teaching a guy something you can always pm him and tell him what he did wrong. - Do not mention sanction.

You can also report the guy instantly, what isn't always that big of a deal, no one will think you're lame or anything. It's lamer to be pissed and not report it because that reaks of cowardly behavior or not caring for your own well being.

Aka I'll have a gf but when she cheats on me I'll forgive her. When someone breaks the rules to walk over you and you don't do anything you are either not doing it because you do not care, or because you are too lazy. If you do not care you will not be upset anyway so it's good. If you are "upset" but you don't do a damn thing - you're to blame, not him.

In the end you can always wait for them to interact with you via PM and then explain things to them slowly. I killed a freelancer in a CSV today because he refused to roleplay when my slaver asked him pilots from his hold. Guy was pissed at me after his death, and he even made a Lane Hacker Ptrans engage me without any warning.

Both contacted me later, explained to 1st that he cannot simply ignore rp, explained to second that he needs to roleplay in order to participate in the game.

Both failed to understand me due their language barrier.
So to sum it all up, sometimes you'll eat ****, sometimes you'll be upset, sometimes you'll feel good because you did teach someone a lesson and they're grateful.

Best thing to do is to be always full of understanding and do your best to explain if they ask. If they do not, report away.

Talk with them about it only if they become belligerent to the action they took. Honestly.

Most of the time people got angry with me because I beat them in a PVP. I actually win sometimes. From their point of view, they lost and they need to vent. I'€™m fine with that. But if they don'€™t understand an established RP that has been set into motion, they blame you for something that, under normal circumstances would be true, but due to a last minute change or an honest RP you established, they freak out on you.

Always best to know that you'€™re not breaking the rules. If you have doubts, double, triple check. Ask here and again, check the rules. If you plan to RP in a particular region of House space, know their rules enough to know what'€™s illegal and why. Knowing enough about the game can make you feel more confident in defending your position and pointing out the error in the other player. Just be careful when you make a mistake and realize the reverse is true too.

Most of the people who went ballistic on me, thought they knew the rules, and or just said they were going to report me out of sheer anger, with no real intention of doing so. Some came back and apologized, others changed their ship names and hoped for the best. Remember, the Print Scrn button is your best friend.

Kind of like driving a car, it'€™s the other idiots you have to watch out for, just keep your eyes on the road and follow the laws. Honestly, the only people who are a threat to you are those who find every excuse not to follow the rules. Just don'€™t be one of them.
