I've always wondered about this question: when a person's born, how would you determine if a person's a Libertonian, Corsair, Gallic, etc.?
Sure, you could say their physical features play out. After all, there were only 6 sleeper ships in the game, and they had distinctive features:
Liberty = American
Bretonia = British
Rheinland = Western European/German
Kusari = Asian
Hispania = Latin/Mediterranean
Gallia = French
But is that really all that we're based on?
Take for example, the Mollys. They're technically Bretonian, but they are considered entirely-different in regards to that they're Irish than pure British.
Or how about those that have been born on the far-fringes of the Edge-worlds, aka the Zoners, aka "melting-pot-faction-of-Sirius?" Isn't >600 years quite a long enough time for interbreeding with all 5 vanilla sleeper ship-races (not including Gallia, for obvious reasons) to make some physical evolution of some sort? America's only 300-400 years old, and they're already notably distinct from Britain, their motherland, in a sort of way.
I'm no anthropologist or geneticist (well... maybe I might become the latter in the future), but I'm just curious about how you would categorize a person's race if, for example, one parent's a zoner, the other parent's a Libertonian, and the baby's born in Planet Malta, but somehow the baby has Kusarian facial features?
If you're asking what 'race' people are who have mixed background, IMO, due to the relative ease of space travel, genetic trees in some areas are just so mixed up with different backgrounds that it's impossible to define one particular racial area, such as the Zoners.
Also, Rheinland is not Russia. It is Germany.
Bretonia is more than British, it is more like the entire United Kingdom.
Hispania is most definitely -not- Caucasian, you've got your terminology wrong there. It's the least defined Sleeper Ship in terms of old earth races (someone else correct me if I'm wrong) but they're Spanish and/or South American.
How about taking into account different gravitational levels of different planets?
They're not listed in the wiki, but it would be fair to assume people would develop different physical appearance on different planets. Dwarves on high g-level planets and so on. 8-|

Yeah, I totally stole that idea from Dan Simmons.
What about Space Stations, or being born in ships? They have artificial-G, so such a solution would be somewhat problematic under those circumstances.

Thanks for correcting me there on various points.
- Yes, I guess that's what the SCRA are for.
- Really...? I just call those people from UK British people. I've never heard someone say something like, "He's a UK-ian," so that's how I assumed people from UK were basically Brits.
- Yes, a blunder on my part. I was going for that suggestion of Spanish/Latin origin, but I referred to the game of Fallout 3 for Hispania's judgement. Guess where that turned out...? :$

Excluding Rei Ikari & Doctor Beckett, all chars I RP (Jeremy, Ellie, Izzy, Zack, Tobias, Strix, Xi, etc) are from planet LA.
Thought Strix and Xi have,a bit of Kusari blood, I say they are,Libertonian.
I say its where they are raised.
this seems like the simplest and most practical solution. But what about a case of something like Planet Erie? Since that Planet's in Libertonian Territory, does that make the Zoners there now technically Libertonian? If not, then if a baby's born on Planet Erie, then does that mean he/she's a Zoner?
Also... if this was the case, then if a person was born in Dublin, then they're a Molly? Does that mean they are now obliged to help the Mollys there? Or is that place still considered Bretonian territory, due to Mollys still not having been granted autonomy?
Easy fix. Whatever station they were apparently born on, take what the faction that OWNS that base into consideration, ever thought of that, eh?
Think about it this way, all of the factions are a melting pot, at the moment, and yes, EVEN Gallic factions are havin' kids with the Outcasts, or Junkers, or who knows anymore, I see Gallic transports in New York for some reason.
Hell, maybe even INVENT a new type of person that goes BEYOND the norm!
How about someone that wasn't born... but was CREATED!?
How about someone that doesn't even KNOW!?
How about someone that is TOLD she's one thing, which she believes is, but is really something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!?
But, no, seriously....

When you rp, you CREATE, IMAGINE, things that are in no way, shape, fashion, form, or style real, but you MAKE it real by inventing little stories to tell to the Police when you are smuggling into Rheinland, or something little that is brought up that you just get an idea for!

I get it, okay?
Yes, we can roleplay whatever the hell we want.
Yes, We can roleplay AI's, aliens, even furries around here (though the latter won't be easy to do)
I just want to know how Citizenship works in Freelancer. Because although you may be able to RP anything, there are limits and need for understanding and consideration of other people's RP as well, don't you think?
Further points:
1.) Person born in a far-away, uncharted system. Since the system's most likely around the Edge-worlds, and Zoners inhabit most of the Edge-worlds, will that person be considered as a Zoner? But the system was explored by a Libertonian firm (OSC or something). Does that mean the person's going to be naturally Libertonian, because the system's claimed by Liberty?
2.) Furry baby is created in a lab on a remote lab somewhere on Planet Cambridge. Is the furry considered Bretonian, because the person was born on Bretonian "soil"? Is the person considered an "Alien" in their birth-certificate, should they apply for citizenship? How will they be considered as when the furry decides to join BMM? How will BMM handle the person's paperwork?
