External websites for Disco groups

So earlier I found out that the .su domain, which was the old top-level domain for the Soviet Union, is still quite functional, and Russia wants to keep it alive for some reason. I did some research, and icmg.su would only cost us six hundred russbucks a year to maintain, which, according to Anne, is just over twenty-one American dollars. Tell me what you guys think.

Also so this is relevant to the rest of Disco, what do you guys think about groups that use external forums, such as the CR?

I don't agree with external faction websites. The leaders of my faction before me made a seperate forums, but I was strongly opposed to it. I believe that anything relevant to my faction can be posted on the official forums, or over skype.

No one will ever look at your external forums except for your own members, so it's pulling forum activity away from the main site, and pulling yourselves out of the light. You're getting no attention, people don't know what you're doing. Don't kid yourself that people will actually be interested enough in other factions to read through 30+ different external forums a day just to see what's new.

Interesting how ICMG is in favor of off site pages. When I was in it, I had made one and instantly got turned down and said it was a stupid idea. Kudos....I guess.

Depends how you would use it. If you make want to make good faction representation you can use the wiki if you need to share information without being seen from the other members you can use skype for short term info and Google docs for docs or any more valuable faction info. If you need separate forum for any reason , do so and make sure that it is closed for non-members, the junkers and the CR hating the other people around in disco is quite fun to read because it is not closed.:crazy:

USI..... good example of what happens with two forums....
you see them trade, you see them fly around. But no routes or any event details is posted here... its in their own forum which isnt publicly open for even guest viewing.

CR forums - their dead, a chatbox in there that lights up for 5 minutes everytime the moon turns blue.

Private clan forums - terrible idea..

.su was assigned as the country code top-level domain for the Soviet Union on September 19, 1990. It remains in use today, even though the Soviet Union itself no longer exists, and is administered by the Russian Institute for Public Networks (RIPN, or RosNIIROS in Russian transcription).
In 2001, the managers of the domain stated that they will commence accepting new .su registrations[citation needed], but it is unclear whether this action is compatible with ICANN policies. ICANN has expressed intentions to terminate the .su domain[when?], and the IANA states that the domain is being phased out,[1] but lobbyists stated in September 2007 that they had started negotiations with ICANN on retaining the domain.[2] In the first quarter of 2008, .su registrations increased by 45%.[3]

External forums are good in a way, but they end up complicating stuff, and in the long run end up as archives. Dead archives.

Thanks for all the replies. For the most part, I agree. I just saw that the .su domain was still existent and thought it would be entertaining to get the thoughts of different folks regarding external forums, and maybe the concept of the .su domain in particular. Several people encouraged me to at least make a thread about it.

And Harus, I don't know who would have told you that, but in the ICMG now we don't say other people have really stupid ideas. We just <strike>say they're stupid people behind their backs</strike> give them ways to improve or flat-out say no. It could never hurt to have external resource hosting other than imageshack, potatobukkit, the wiki or the forums. I'd advise you to disregard such opinions in the future.


But ye, overall thanks for the constructive replies, guys. I can think of several uses for external sites, beyond even that of just forums, but it's important that they not grow too big - members will start concentrating on them over the Disco forums, which is never a good thing, or they'll end up as wastes of database space. Maintaining a balance is the key to successfully having fun and <strike>spreading communism</strike> setting a good example for others.
