i know they are somewhat different corp backgrounds i am lookin for but i think one of the 3 would be nice to get into. would need a little help getting into a ship and stuff, but i can pay back anything i borrow. an active corp would be nice too. space is lonely huh?
There's a few active merc factions you may want to look at... Mandelorians and Reavers top the list. BHG is also a pretty well known merc faction;)
As for pirates... Outcasts and Corsairs are the most common. It'd help to know where your interests lay. NPC cargo piracy? PvP on lawfuls? Pirating PC traders? Smuggling?

pirating players would be most interesting, but having a fighter/bomber to do the occasional mischievous run into NY to play with the loacal authoraties would be high on the list too. As for being a merc/BH, running headhunting for the highest bidder would be fun i guess, or adding some extra protection for traders might be good too

I don't see what does that have to do with piracy. Join Xenos or HF.
Venator Private Security is a good merc group. We mainly escort traders, though do a odd bounty kill here and there (in bretionia mostly for hunting) We are rather unique in that we concentrate more on escorts then bounty's like most merc factions and/or BHG.
Sounds to me a Liberty unlawful faction like the Liberty Rogues or Lane Hackers would suit you well.
