Yeah, so I finally gave in and upgrade my Firefox v3.XX to Firefox 4.
Ye gods.
I wish I had done it sooner.
Firefox 4 makes the old version look like it was pedal powered.
Websites that used to take a little while (read as more than a few seconds) to load, now come up almost instantly and I like what they have done with it.
The 'new look' browser doesn't have that status bar right at the bottom, so the viewable area goes right to the bottom of the screen.
Sure it's not much, but it makes a difference.
A few other little changes are that they have moved certain buttons around.
The 'home page' button is now on the far right side. I know it's the 'home page' button, because, you guessed it, it is a little house.
The 'reload page' button is now at the end of the page address bar, where you enter the address of the web site you want to be at and, this is the cool part, as the page is loading, that button turns into the 'stop loading' button.
As you can guess, I'm a little happy with the 'new' Firefox and the best bit is all of the plug-ins I had on the 'old' (3.xx) Firefox still work.
If you are still using the 'old' 3.xx version of Firefox, upgrade now, I reckon you'll be impressed.
I've been using it since the first beta, and yes, its quite an improvement. if you would like even more speed, install an addon called fasterfox lite. basically its an addon with a number of automatic presets that you can choose to improve your browsing speed. the speed in opening pages is basically unmatched by any other browser.
Got it like 2 weeks ago. Definitely noticeable change in page loading. Also, one of the sites i go to used to have millions of pop ups and you could never watch the movie without taking 10 minutes to go through the pop ups. I dunno if firefox4 has anything to do with it, but, no more pop ups.

Personally I didn't notice much difference between FF3 and FF4 when I upgraded, except for some of the buttons. I believe most of the interface changes that they made were Windows-only. The only thing slowing down my page loading times in any browser is my internet connection, not the browser's rendering speed.

You're right about Windows only changes, but that's not much of a concern, the Mac style will always be like that, Ubuntu are copying the Mac style, and everything else uses a UI that isn't really that broken (running OpenSUSE as my dev box, dislike the way Ubuntu is going, Arch seems like too much effort atm).

I installed it 10 days ago and it kept crashing while I download torrents. Then I installed it my gf's pc (single core) few days ago and machine started coughing for some reason. While Mozilla on, PC simply responded slower whether you were surfing or just clicking on my computer. Latest IE is way better now.
Never had any problems with previous Mozilla (but few of my friends did) and it doesn't matter 'cause Google Chrome is better, more simple, faster, (not matter how fast your PC is) more stable and it doesn't annoy you with those stupid updates all the time as Mozilla does.

Chrome DOES perform faster on basic speed tests like for like, but I've always found I go back to Firefox, simply because of the extensibility of the browser is still far superior to anything else, and that's personal opinion.
Your problem may just be the age of the machine itself. Firefox has enabled hardware accelearation for the Windows Vista and 7 platforms. If your GF has a single core machine, chances are it's running Windows XP, which is the source of your problem (and was, IMO, worse than Vista, but that's another story), so I'd stick with Chrome. But XP is now 10 years old, so performace issues on the OS isn't surprising.

There will be an uninstall program for Firefox 4 somewhere on your PC, usually in the same directory as Firefox is installed in.
Interesting. I've been running XP on a i5 quad core for a while now, sure XP IS old, but it still works.
I haven't had any problems with this current install of XP, not any that can be directly attributed to XP at any rate.
More importantly, XP will run 99% of the programs I have and some of those, like me, are getting on a bit.
I'll probably lash out and buy a copy of Win 7.... about the time Win 8 comes out.
I've always been one step behind with OS, mostly because the very latest OS normally has stabilty problems/bugs that need to be sorted, while the OLD OS has already been there done that.
