Freelancer ID infocard / roleplay

Due the recent discussion abut the bans of Mercenaries and Freelancers in Rheinland and Liberty is was thinking about the roleplay of the Freelancers.

The Freelancer's infocard:
Quote:Pilot carrying this ID is a lawful Freelancer who works for him/herself, unwilling to join any of the Sirius factions. Freelancer ID grants its owner right to participate in lawful missions and military operations, fulfil lawful and unlawful bounty contracts, escort traders, hunt pirates and terrorists. Freelancer ID owner is not allowed to pirate and openly join unlawful forces.
Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Gunboats
Carrying unmounted IDs in your ship, as well as not equipping an ID, is a serious crime.

In my opinion there is a contradiction between 'lawful Freelancer' and 'fulfil unlawful bounties'.
I think Freelancer should not be able to fulfil unlawful bounties.

Futhermore they should not be allowed to fly transports (trader ships with cargo hold more than 500 units).
The purpose of a Freelancer is to freelance in various ways but not to become a trader.

Freelancer is basically a "jack of all trades". I think it's fine how it is.

I personally don't see a Freelancer attacking a lawful bounty, but would prefer if they are continued to use transports. I use a Transport for exploration, I would hate to have to find something else...

While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack

Transports should only be open to traders (whether of the independent or corp-aligned variety). If you're doing anything that requires the cargo hold of a transport, imho you're OORP for a Freelancer and should be carrying a Trader ID of some sort.

No longer active online due to a dwindling amount of non-PvP (trading, pirating, mining, etc.) fun in the new version.

If your flying a transport and trading then essentially your a trader.

I disagree. Allow me to use a media example, the TV show Firefly. In that show they fly a stock frieghter (the rough evuilant to discovery mid to low range transports). In the various episodes they have done a variety of work from robbery, to smuggling, to salvage. basically any sort of odd job that pays and will keep them alive.

This is what I define as freelancing, even if my example is a touch on the unlawful side. If a freelancer gets a deal on a hold full of Deuterium, why wouldn't he haul it. All a freelancer needs is for a job to pay him enough to keep his crew fed, and his ship flying.

An actual trader likely has contacts, permits, log sheets, keeps his ship within legal mass. Things that a Freelancer wouldn't like want or need to cultivate.

Quote:ship within Legal mass
derailing thought.......if modern transport trucks must keep withing a certain weight to be allowed to run on the highways in order to prevent road damage. Would the FL trade lanes not have a mass restriction. Those things accelerate ships through space at enormous speeds, that would require the expenditure of energy. The more mass an object has, the more energy required to accelerate it. If the object has to much mass, you risk it traveling at a slower speed then the objects behind it. That would be catastrophic. Explains why you don't see a BS cruising the lanes anyway.

Ever seen the movie serenity? Basically the captain of the ship (whatever his name was) was a Freelancer and he did like you said use his ship as a getaway ship etc, delivery ship etc. Even though the ship he was using was indeed a large ship, it wasn't exactly a transport. It would probably have been a gunboat if anything. Which shows that if a Gunboat would probably be far more fitting for the situation you are describing.

Even though you may not have enough cargo space it would probably be more realistic in terms of RP.

I see a Transport as a ship more for perminant trading. Whereas if youv'e got a lucky find thus it's a one off i'd just stick with the ship youv'e got.

Another option is raiding with another player and splitting the money, but somthing tells me that you fly solo.

My beef with that is that a Gunship is more or less a warship. For my freelancer I wanted something that was a bit more civilian, the Behemoth. Its not super at combat, but I assure you it is not a slouch. I have collected bounty's with it, and a bit of smuggling and anything else I have felt like doing. which is the beauty of being a freelancer.

NEXUS & Matsuda-Shingen: The "Serenity" movie is a sequel to the "Firefly" TV series. Both feature the same characters (except two that died between the TV series and movie) and ship. The ship (Firefly) is a transport that is available in the Discovery mod. Look at the mod readme, if you want to know where to buy it.

The Freelancers are not a faction.

There can be evil Freelancers, and good freelancers. Freelancers can also be rogues that own transports and take up smuggling missions, for a price.
