Right, I'm doing that.
And, I'm rather lost in my linux experience.
using Ubuntu 7.10, and would like some pointers, if anyone has tried/has ideas/knows what doesn't work.
If you have any ideas, please post, these things work because everyone can have imput.
That was not necessary, Senya. The computer she's using is Linux and she isn't going to go spend a few hundred bucks for a copy of Windows. I'm still searching for a way, the only thing I know of that might help is a program called "wine", not sure what it stands for. I'll provide a link later when I can.
I somehow doubt you'll get it running without some serious tweaking, but even that wouldn't guarantee anything. Basically for DirectX games you'll need Cedega (formerly WineX) which transforms DX graphic calls to OpenGL. It's a wrapper, so does have certain impact on performance and does not guarantee stability at all. Some games work, some not. Freelancer heavily relies on DirectX API, not just for graphics but for audio, controls and network as well.
Edit: well, you are out of luck here. It doesn't support Freelancer, zero playability. Blame Microsoft for closed source and tight reliance on DirectX interface.
Wine is a windows emulator for linux, it's free and should be easy enough
to install with ubunto. Installing and running freelancer might be a whole
different story however.
Wine is mostly for emulating productivity apps, don't know how it
will do with games, i have never tried. The linux operating system
of choice for me is Xandros, it is made for office productivity and has
wine preinstalled with the operating system.
Linux for a stable work platform, XP for games. It's a setup that works
well for me.
A friend of mine uses Linux and tried to get FL running... Didnt succeed... Until few days ago.. I dont have Linux, so I have no idea how and what, but I may ask him. Give me some time...
