i just found it - and thought it fits PERFECTLY into the ancient debate. - its only a subjective pov of course .... but its nicely explained.

( for those who don t wanne click a random youtube link : - its about perception of fighters and capital warships in space )

My two cents : all his theory is based on laser or speed light weapon. If the future proof that laser is inefficient or easily countered space fighter will be effective.

its just funny to observe how its a "game" when real life must not apply when its in favour of ones cause - but RL does apply when it aids the cause.

"its just a game" is a knockout argument like "deal with it".

how many a disuccions were based on "but a snub is meant to sink battleships" - or vice versa "a capital ship is a huge weaponsplatform"

we apply realism when it fits us. - but what we can all benefit from is as many points of view on the matter as possible, wouldn t you agree? - no matter if its fiction or realism, science or wishful thinking.

a problem of this community is that ppl are very close minded and stick to their own pov no matter what ( the problem of humans in general, not that community exclusivly )

it can just help to see how someone tries to apply science to ... well... fiction.

after all - isn t that what we "play" ? - science fiction - half of the term is "science" the other is "fiction"

that video proofs NOTHING - thats for sure. - but it can make you think. - what it will also not do is revert the ww1 dogfight setting of freelancer.

edit: i also enjoy watching how others justify how fighters are meant to destroy capital ships - if its decently done.

anyway - that one is an old one - which i still very much like - its a tech demo of Nexus 2 ( which was cancelled )

skip to 2:10 to get to the capship fight

Actually, it's quite true. Larger ships can move faster because of larger engines, they can carry and fire more weapons due to, again, larger engines and a larger powerplant. Due to the increased size, there's also more armor due to the increased size. There is absolutely no use for space fighters, anything they can do, a warship can do better.

He's missing a very big point....

The lazor projector must be able to track objects moving in relative motion. You cannot manually aim...at anything smaller than a war ship because.

1.) You will not see it.
2.) You cannot compute it's direction
3.) You will not see it.
4.) You're no cowboy/girl.
5.) Your sense of direction is flawed
6.) You will not see it.

Also without the aid of super powerful sensor guns, or whatever you wanna use, bigger ships will be no less effective than fighter size ships.

Fighters will not work as without computer navigation to stimulate your sense of direction, by feeding you data. You will be so lost the moment you start moving you'll never be effective in combat.

If you wanna simulate real time space combat go make a combat mod of Orbiter. Please:)

There is one point missing in all of it: It's TODAY'S sight on FUTURE stuffz.
Don't you think earlier in history people thought warships can't be defeated ?
It's why ships like the Yamato were built.
They were proofed wrong.
None of us, wether it being top-scientists or simple students, can tell what the future will be, look like.
In todays view of sight, the video is good and fits our knowlegde of physics and generally science.
If you think about the future...

Real millitary space machines

Polyus millitary sat - had a directed energy weapon but never reached orbit due incorrectly calculated launch
[Image: polyus.jpg]

Salyut 3 space station (had a 30 mm cannon)

MiG-105

X-37

Not so sci-fi-ish just most of them utterly uknown. Also something quite old

[Image: 480px-Russian_stationary_plasma_thrusters.jpg]

Ion hall effect thrusters - similar to the position keeping ones on the Polyus sat

Building a huge battleship would -STILL- cost more and require a bigger crew. Just sayin'.
