- a jolly and easy going .. sometimes non-sensical way?
- a rigid and serious .. life-like way?
- a fantasy way with telling names, black and white schemes?
this is just a general question. - it concerns many different areas of disco....:
- the effects ingame ( for example the over-the-edge heavy mortar )
- the naming policy ( for example names like some of the older Liberty Rogue faction names [nothing against your names, but they were quite silly] )
- the look of models ( cartoonish over the top..... realistic.... sophisticated but totally rediculously streamlined etc. )
mixing all those is not the best idea. - for example - a serious looking Rheinland ship shooting rainbows might look a bit odd.
so - what is disco/sirius for you?
for me - its more serious. - i think that easy going chat in RP breaks immersion and that effects too colourful are also out of place. i much prefer grey/steel/white ships to colourful ships with bright markings. and i like serious names the most.
I will have to weigh in on your idea of discovery myself.
I don't mind a bit of lulwutism going on, but if it becomes the new standard then I think it can only harm the enviroment we currently have.
If Disco is supposed to be 'true' to Vanilla - then it needs to be serious.
That being said, even the most serious games are well served by a healthy dose of humour. People that can laugh at themselves earn more respect than people who try (and fail) to take themselves too seriously.
I mean for all my serious roleplay, my GMG Paramilitary is still Sum Yungai, and my most prized character is Azuki Tamagochi [sic]...
- there is the silly type / prank type of humor - that makes you laugh out of embarassment ( like fart jokes )
- then there is the silly but not "dumb" kind of humor ( bit like monty python ) which appears to be rediculous, but also deeper than it might look
- there is the sophisticated humor that plays with words and sayings ( like terry pratchett ) humor that is VERY hard to roleplay ( hence it would be hard to make a good terry pratchett movie, cause most of the humor is in the words )
- and there is the humor that is not really funny - but somewhat .... it is ( like woody allen )
i am by no means saying that disco steers into one direction or another ... its mainly about wondering what the community actually wishes.
Economy, military, proper roles to everything.
Rest does not concern me at all.
So Real-life style, based on some real and good RP, thought through to be real and fun as well.
To be honest I allways hated and hate the weapon effects in Freelancer. They look like a clown vommiting a rainbow...**** fireworks they are. Sometimes you can not see the enemy becouse of the useless fancy effects. I think that simple, small and less colorful effects are much more better than the ones in game and mods now. Take for example the Star wars mods. They have simple effects for weapons and it is really a joy to have pvp with them. Sure some big and powerful battleship weapons looks good with fancy effects, but that is all.
About the models. Well look at the sci-fi games nowadays, the majority of the ships are sophisticated and hi-tech and it not allways means they needs to be aerodynamic (useless thing in space anyway) or steamlined.
I would take the serious course of Disco. In my opinion there are enough players anyway who are not playing really serious in RP. I loved the RP on the server until now, so it shouldn't be changed.
About the effects. I like them how they are now. I wouldn't like more colors or other effects in Disco cause of my computer, it's not the newest.

Also this. Less fancy fx, less FPS lag. And about the names...since I 1st time logged in main server I allway tried to have some serious or RP related name. When I see some nonsense names ingame it makes my mad...It is a roleplay server, people should name their chars accordingly. Some kind of name regulation would be a good idea. Maybe it will cause some new or lolwut players to leave, but hey if they cannot spare some minutes of their life and give their chars a name that makes sense, then why are they playing on a hardcore RP server like disco, right? Just my 2 cents.
The overall theme and atmosphere of the roleplay environment is constituted by players who inhabit it. You can't force people to role play in a way which you feel is more realistic. What makes Disco interesting is the amount of idiots and simply clueless people with roleplaying which breaks away from the life and death serious things experienced players come out with.
Weapon effects could be made thinner and smaller and god dammit just delete code name guns with rainbow effects.

Aww, leave the fancy codes as they are, if you don't like them don't use them. Some Codes aren't even that fancy.
And I like the way it is now, there are enough serious and good RPers around to make the server look like RP one. And the ones, who don't take the RPing so serious make the server more relaxed. I for example have no problem talking a bit ooRP with my last PvP opponent about what happened bla bla bla.
And to the 'fancy effects = mor lag' , dunno what you mean. If your computer/laptop isn't able to handle 2003/4 oriented effects, how do you play other games ? I sounds like the few effects of a 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 are killing your PC. I got a rather bad laptop and got no prob with the pewpew in Hamburg.
