I thought of something while testing cruiser and destroyer classes on my server that you always thrust around trying to fly like a gunboat, well cruisers should be strafing more like battleships but they aren't much of a strafers because you can't strafe more than 10-15? (FL speed units) and you can't dodge anything.
Battleships on the other hand can but not as much thinking of thier size and all. So I think Bcruisers, cruisers and destroyers should have thier strafing speed increased and maybe compensate that with a reduced speed or turn rate.
What I'm trying to say is that it looks funny when cruisers thrusts, for example let's say a DS/CR 1v1 of course both goes into engine kill and tries to out turn the opponent that's what I would've done and try to hit 'em from behind.
Oh and I have a little question about ID's: Can't mercs get cruisers anymore? Cause the merc ID says you can only have ships up to gunboat, when I had my old account I had merc ID'ed Omni cruiser and Omni was then on the edge of unlawful. So what ID can mega corporations get for thier capitalships? I'll guess some of you will say caps are only for house militaries and it's out of RP for corps to have 'em, my only excuse is that Omni Industries is partly a weapon developing corporation.
i think its up to opinions what a warship "should" do in a battle.
usually, they would have independent turrets firing on multiple targets to create some sort of curtain fire. sadly though, they cannot do that in freelancer, so they are "just fighters". strafing battleships ( or cruisers, destroyers ) is as OK as battleships flown like a fighter or battleships flying a straight line while being in turret mode.
what would really help a battleship is to set evasive manouvers ( autopilot ) while the player can concentrate on firing his turrets. i think you can make a ship fly in a circle while being in turretmode, but thats all that works.
others think that battleships could / should just sit there and broadside ( actually side to side ) each other, like ww2 battleships. - only too bad that battleships in Freelancer can hardly outrange their own size sometimes. - so its a little stupid when battleships sit like 500 meters from each other.
there are many hardcoded problems that make battleships and cruisers less realistic in terms of "how they should feel in a battle".
when i am flying, i like to accelerate to 90 and E-kill and then joust the enemy. - but that only works on some. - on other targets, one can just sit there and concentrate fully on hitting the other one. - if battleship fights happened at a range of like 3.000 ... evading with strafing or even flying evasive manouvers would basicly work to a certain extend, but ships are too easily, too quickly in very close range - and usually remain there.
when it comes to battlecruisers, - they are good at charging their targets. they can take down a battleships shields easily from very far away and damage their hull severely on the first pass ( provided they are not blown up ). then they should prolly pass the battleship and regen their shields for another joust..... too bad thats called shield running:P

On default it's H, then combine it with Space, and you are all set.... I use to practice on the npcs until I could do it against a player, thats hitting them with a battlerazor shot, scared the hell outta a couple of pilots doing that...

Thats how it is, I'd like to have an extra turret for each battleship thats lvl 3 tops, mount fighter turrets on em for close in defence.
After all, you can cripple/kill an npc titan with 16 adv. stunpulse turrets all firing at the same time, looks alot like flak shells streaming out:)
Though, anyone got the stats of a light mortar to hand? Or whatever the name of the mortar(s) for cruisers/destroyers is.
Have played were capships strafe beter gives more strategy to a fight. Also would be nice if Gun Boats and Destroyer class thrusted a little faster than Cruisers and Battleships. Maybe even a thruster that does just a little beter than 90 for Battleships.
Yeah Crunch, if we are both thinking of the same place the BS primary turrets has a range of around 6K with a refire of 1per second, based on the Nomad Turret I think.
With a slow refire it still gave the fighters a chance to dodge so they dident get pwned so bad.
Gave a whole new meaning to Battleship Battles. You either learned how to strafe those beasts or you died. I think something like that would be good for the mod, would breath a whole new life into Capships here.
Another mod I loved replaced the engine kill key on the Battleships with Warp. That also gave a whole new dimension on things and allowed battleships not to hassle with tradelanes which can be a big pain.
