The reason why turret zoom was disabled was because anybody could enter turret mode, zoom out to the maximum and be able to hit fighters on that level with his turrets without ever moving the mouse because the crosshair would pretty much stay in place at highest zoom and your cursor locks onto the crosshair always. So what you actually had was an autoaim system of sorts. People wouldn't use it "just" on caps but on fighters as well (there's a video on youtube of a sabre just turning circles in turret mode and firing from max zoom, hitting *a lot*.
Turret steering as it is still unbalances a number of ships, but not to the point turret zoom does.
<strike>I use neither, since I never downloaded any of the new test versions. But I was still a bit confused when I heard that zoom was getting the reserved for 4.86 and steering was staying.
From what little I've heard, I understand that the turret steering gives a major combat advantage to capital ships, and according to the title of some thread that I never bothered to read, fighters as well. I think a dev also commented on the fact that ships "hadn't been balanced" for turret steering yet, but I may be remembering that wrong.
On the other hand, turret zoom just lets you see things from a greater distance. I don't see much use for it in combat, unless you're using it in combination with turret steering to get a better view of your battlefield while fighting. It just seems like a neat little thing you can do.
So why remove it, but keep steering? It's not that I think turret steering absolutely has to go, or turret zoom absolutely has to come back immediately, just that I would have expected things to go the other way around.
So I guess I'll go ahead and say "Sure, bring back turret zoom".</strike>
EDIT: Oh. Blodo ninja'd me. Yeah, okay. That's a fair enough reason. We can leave turret zoom out.
Turret steering was never designed to be used by fighters and bombers in the first place. So the decision to release it for testing on all ships was a mistake.
Fighters are not supposed to fight each other in this way and this introduces a lot of imbalance. I don't want to see turret steering and zoom except for capital ships in the update.

I claim bias here. What about Gunboats, transports and ships like the woefully inept spatial?

I'm sure Cabulb is very sorry he wasn't specific enough for you and will make sure to include details of every potential variable in all future posts.

The camera doesnt move freely - in fact if you dont touch the mouse, and move the ship with the keys you will see the camera rotates with the ship.
The only way to keep the crosshair fixed on one point in space is to move the mouse the other way to counter the ship turning.
For slow ships that is easy to to. For fast ships like fighters it is nigh impossible!
Anyone who says it makes using fighters easier is, frankly, having a lend!
The point wasn't that the camera locks on to the target. The point is that when you zoom out it is much easier to aim at the red cross and hit your target. In addition to that it allows you to shoot sideways.
