Space battles and whatnot are more or less covered by Freelancer but things like stealing a spaceship or boarding a station aren't. What if; if someone wants to steal something (eg. a liberty battleship, some weapons, whatever els one would want) they have to play a pen and paper RP game to determine weather or not they are successful.
This is supposed to be an RP based server right? Lets expand our horizons a bit.
I have been thinking about that myself. Star Wars d20 system fits perfectly for such a thingie. But then it is a LOT of work to run an rpg campaign. Who would be the master? An admin? Would that be necessary? Maybe if the consequences of the rp story do not affect too much the whole universe of Disco, its not necessary for it to be an admin.
We went from using pen, paper and dice as a mechanic for playing out our RP stories to using digital simulations as a mechanic for playing out our RP stories. I'd say we've expanded our horizons already. I used to play pen and paper DnD. Writing a story on pen and paper does not equal RP. Same with these forums, writing a story does not equal RP. Going in-game to act out your story under the guise of a personality you are taking the Role as is what RP is (or in the sake of pen and paper; gathering people at the dinner table and having a session about the story you wrote). These stories are a great tool for facilitating RP as they are cue cards that help the person who is going to play the role of one of the characters in the story and gives guidelines to how that character's personality should be role played as. Discovery FL is filled with these cue cards, both in-game and on the forums. These guidelines in the form of much written creativity give us a clear idea of the how to role play for the various groups sprinkled about the Freelancer Game. It should really not come as a surprise when a Liberty Rogue makes extortion demands from a a trader and shoot the trader down for not complying, the Liberty Rogue is playing his role. If we are to expand the horizons of a subject then we need to first get the majority to acknowledge what the subject is which means we need to break away from accusing others of lack of RP because they were destroyed in PvP combat when a simple glance through all the stories and such make a clear indication that he's doing what he's supposed to be doing.
@ Escopton: yeah, something along those lines, but i was thinking something along the lines of a mission, not a whole campaign. The GM can be a neutural party or admin aproved person, depending of the importance of the event.
@ Prowler: I think you missed my train of thought. The idea is to fill a gap in Freelancer's game mechanice. To play out that which is otherwise not possible without modding another game. Wasn't really thinking about the quality of RP.
Actually this idea is kind of similar to an idea discussed here not long ago which I am having trouble finding, something to do with modding an FPS to play out land battles for freelancer.
I would suggest simply doing it freeform, like we have been doing for oh so long already, but the fact that it isn't blindingly obvious makes me weep for this community.
Seriously, does THIS ENTIRE FORUM SECTION not exist for some people or something?
I mean, it's only THE SECOND LARGEST FORUM IN THE ROLEPLAYING SECTION.
