From my view, it seems the current ethos is to release big updates into the game after a big gap in the updates, to allow people to get used to them and act according. Other than the current tweaks and tests in the system comes and goes.
What would your opinion be to updating in chunks? As in, release new ships or systems every couple of months or so? Would this be a better or worse system since focus can be placed on one area and such.
I'm not saying it should be changed, I assume the dev staff have enough things to do other than FL. But I just want to get this out there to see your opinions.
What happened with .85 was a result of poor pre-planning, poor organization, and that it was felt that using the auto-updater regularly would not be the best approach. This has been discussed several times by many different groups of devs, most of those discussions including Cannon.
What happened with .86 is not likely to happen to .87. A few months is what we want between dev versions. Spending a year on each version is most certainly not what we intended.
We are currently working on trying to get .86 out as soon as it is feasible.
Cannon is in a way taking the job of producer. Didn't think about possibly getting a person whose main job is to running the agenda, the calender, etc. I'll bring that up with Cannon.
I think one year per mod version is perfect. No need to hurry up mean less mistakes, besides you have time to try all new stuff and concentrate on playing rather then trying new stuff all the time.
Balance in time. Not too often and not too seldom
Problem with holding people to a schedule is that this is a volunteer project. Deadlines add stress and that kills the fun in doing it... People tend to forget that the crapload of time going into building and devving is something noone gets paid for. So once it stops being fun, people stop doing it. People bitching at the devs tend to kill the fun in devving - which causes people to leave the devteam - which causes more delays.

I'm not bitching, I don't mean to come off like that. It is a problem that it is a dev project.
Maybe a campaign of "donate for a few small bonuses for a short time to get better equipment to devs/devs don't get penny until X is done?" That may give a sense of slight urgency.
