So, I know it is possible to mount fighter turrets on transport turret hard-points to replace those sorry excuses for fighter defense weapons; also known as Type 4 Transport Turrets. But my question is, was this intentional?
Is this ability just a bug that slipped through that is scheduled for correction? Is equipping fighter turrets on a transport considered a misuse of equipment, or exploitation?
I know I'd much rather have fighter turrets on my transport ship than the Type 4's, due to their horrific power consumption, but I don't want to end up with a sanction.
Last I checked, the range is woefully inadequate. Remember, transports are big; on many, a typical fighter turret won't even be able to reach from the back to the front.
Fighter turrets are much more energy efficient then transport turrets so they won't be bothered too much by the power vacuume that is the 100k transport shield. The also have faster turret turning speed. Their only downside is:

It really depends on the type of transport. I have seen liners use an all Purple Goddess turret setup quite effectively against a lone bomber. Corsairs have been using Tizzies on their Ptrans for as long as I can remember, just as Rogues have been using their class <strike>5 turrets (can't remember the name of them, turret version of the Sammuels).</strike> Belial Turrets- Thanks Baconsoda
I say go experiment with a friend in conn and see what works.

This is pretty true. That said, there's a couple of transports which can benefit from fighter turrets. I've had trouble fighting Shires with full Purple Goddess Turrets in the past, however a Gunboat or Transports would likely rip it apart. Corsair Pirate Transports with two or three Tizona Turrets in the front have also been rumored to be pretty wicked.
But it's safer to use Transport turrets. Not against the rules to use fighter turrets if your ID allows that technology, but generally Transport Turrets are better for Transports.
EDIT: Oh, yes, Belial Turrets on Pirate Transports are MEAN! Dear me goodness, if you want to chase off a snub in that ship, put those guns on it.

Small hint: While the Type 4's are utterly impotent and energy guzzlers, Type 3's are still superior to most fighter point defense guns. 800m/s and over 1000m range. If you don't like those huge warts of the standard type 3, you can use the Small Transport Turrets instead (planet capitols sell them, each house has their own), which have the same stats as the type 3.
That said, some fighter turrets do well on transports, and it is legit. The Purple Goddess turret with 840m range and the Buckshot turret are reasonable choices if you prefer high refire versions. I haven't tested what an Akegata loaded up with GMG type banana guns would do, but I wager that'd be a pretty steady stream of firepower.

some transport ships can't benefit at all from class 5 turrets, and some... yes. How are mounted?
IMHO, if transport is very wide (large, not long), turrets with short range are not useful at all. My old hegemon (yes, ok is not properly a transport ship... it's only an example of wide ship) has big problems with these, for example.
It depends to defending style, too. My delighted tactic (expecially with gunboats) is to running away with thruster to gain more friendy place, and fire at will with backwards turrets (with 1 or two Type 1... to give some concern to shield's attacker), so very fast guns are not so needful. But it needs very huge armor to be a good tactic, and some... mad surprises to gain time to recharge crappy transport shield. eh eh (I hold this for me )
EDIT: Substantially... front with 3-4 type 2 (when attacker surpass me...)... middle with type 3, back with type 2 (or 3) and type 1. Maybe weapons grouping may help, it you have not so big powercore. At today I see no reason at all to mount hungry type 4.
To be honest, I prefer fighter turrets over transport turrets on my traders.
For example:
- My CAU8 Convoy Shire with 12 Splitters (Fighters, Bombers and even Gunboats think twice to attack me.)
- My Steelworkers Pirate Train with 7 Barragers (Just yesterday I killed a LR Barghest who pirated me, although I just had a AU8.)
- My IC Stork with 6 Debilitators (You can't kill anything with that, when you're alone anyways. But if you're escorted by a Bomber/Fighter, you can support them with your pulses, which really helps.)
The range of those fighter turrets may not be the best. But the dps is nearly the same, and they have a a higher refire rate. If you're meeting a gunboat, you won't have a chance against it anyways. (As long as he isn't the worst pilot.)
But with fighter turrets, you'll have a quite high chance against other fighters (and bombers).
And if your aim is good, you can kill them almost easily! Because you'll hit them all the time.
And if you're in pairs, you could also kill a gunboat.
Basically, I'm working towards a Hegemon which I plan to use as a pirate ship. While it is large and slow, the idea of sporting 10 turrets and decent cargo space for less than 100M is intriguing. Plus from a distance, a Hegemon won't be as obvious a threat as a PTrans.
I was thinking of mounting 6 Type 2's in the forward positions for pirating other transports, and then filling the remaining 4 slots with either Belial or Purple Goddess turrets to help shake pursuing fighters/bombers.
