Just today, Microsoft Live blocked my hotmail account - which I'd been using for more than 6 years now - because it apparently had unauthorised access and was used to send spam.

I was asked to recover my account by going to an alternate email address and get a verification code. But the address that showed up was one that I'd never seen before. It's safe to assume that address is non-existent since Live was my first email provider. I tried to answer the security question, but I can't match it even though I'm sure I know the answer.

Now I'm locked out of my primary email account (pretty much the only one I ever use and is used in literally every single sign up). I sent customer support a report but I doubt I can get any results this way. I need to get access to this account, even temporarily, it has too much important information. Do you have any idea what I can do to here?

Yep. Happened to me once as well. That account's a goner, register a new one. If you're using MSN, might want to send your contacts a note that they should probably block your account...

I think something similar has happened to my account before but I just ignored it and never bothered to change my password. This is my fault, really, and I feel pathetic. But now I can't change my password even if I wanted to since hotmail won't let me sign in and I can't answer my security question.

I really want to keep using this account since countless accounts of mine rely on this address and it has some important emails I want to keep. I'm currently trying to contact customer support.

In all srsness, can't you recover at least some of the information inside? I imagine for 6 years it will have a lot of personal information

Live customer support got back to me in a surprisingly timely fashion, despite my previous assumptions about outsourced Microsoft customer support. They verified my ownership of the account with the information I provided and gave me access provided I change my password, which I did promptly.

So crisis averted, now I just have to find the time to back up my 10k+ inbox.

I reccommend using a more secure Email account in the future.
