I'm curious who here got into this genre before FL? Did anyone play Elite or Wing Commander: Privateer? Or tradewars on a BBS?

Please Share your experiences.

The first game in this genre I played was Elite II.

Elite, tradewars(which was the awesomest thing I had played till then, I really miss bbs games, there was one, it was like a arena fighter game, anyone remember the name?), Starflight 2 (which came with an great map, and a decoder square for the copy protect), and then Project Nomad. After that it's the usual, privater and such. I would argue that the WC seris was not a space trading or freelancer game.

also if your into old freelancer type games check out this site: http://www.the-underdogs.info/theme.php?id=10

Yes , sir. You are correct..though they were very similar in their flight characteristics.

They had the same engine, what was cool about WC was the fact that how you played determined what happened, it was one of the first game like that, before, you played the same missions in a campaign whether you won ever mission or lost every mission.

My first would have to be Starflight for the Sega Genesis. An AWESOME game indeed. Not really trading but it was a helluva lotta fun mining minerals on the different planets to sell back on the spaceport.

You ask me why Im weary, why I cant speak to you.
You blame me for my silence, say Its time I changed and grew.
But the war's still going on dear, and theres no end that I know...
And I cant say if were ever...
I cant say if were ever gonna be free.

Elite (the original black and white one) on a 16 colour 48K ZX Spectrum with a rubber keyboard, and a cassette tape to load the game from.

It truly broke the mould in terms of the genre.

I'm also starting to feel positively old now...... but at least my old ZX spectrum NEVER crashed to desktop (didn't have one), and there wasn't a BSD (or one of these).

Elite on C64. I can still hear the docking music. Manual docking was a bit on the side of precise back then;)

Flying under radar.
