So here we are, 4.86 with bases and cloaking devices and such.
Yet even official factions are having a hard time maintaining a base without people devoting (IMO) unnecessary chunks of time over it.
If the ships themselves aren't even that realistic with fuels, repairs, crews... Etc, why the heck does a base need THAT much supply to maintain it?
I get we're trying to keep the base making to large factions and encourage teamwork, but this level of time spending is unnecessary. In my opinion, two people in the game should be able to keep a base running ( a low level, hidden base)
I don't see the reason how we have to supply it every 10 hours, or it goes kaboom. A base is made of metal and alloys, it doesn't blow itself up after a few hours, it stays there. Yes, a shielded base should be supplied more often, as it takes energy to power the shield.
This is my idea on a base operation:
A base should take more material to construct, and more costly.
A constructed base, should stay there ( no outside damage) for at least a month, before the server kills it. Similar to a player ship, which gets deleted from inactivity after 6 months. (the base described here is a hidden, low leveled base. It should be easy destructible if hostile player discovers it.)
When a base is under construction or production, it should require once a day resupplies. And if no supplies, production halts.
To maintain a shield around the base, it should require once every 12 hour resupply.
As for the amount of supplies needed, I think the current amounts should be at least cutted down by 30% or more. However, the materials required to make cloaking/jump drive devices should be around the same, since they're suppose to be rare and all that.
Overall, base shouldn't destroy themselves, if no supply, no production/upgrade. But a well hidden base shouldnt just kaboom by itself... After 10 hours.
Discuss.
(typed this on the iPhone, excuse me if things aren't too elaborated.)
<strike>Dude, we're not here for a second job. Building and maintaining a base is already hard and expensive. We wasted atleast 2 billions to make an average base and supply it.</strike>
tl;dr tbh
Working the upkeeps isn't hard, I am sure 15k MOX is nothing to move in a 5ker, 1k food/water/oxygen/robotics/panels too.

That.
It's hard enough

I have my own base, built and maintained by only me.

Thats my point, having fun should be placed above realism here.

Bases are fun as they are, I mean, look at Kusari. With 2 playerbases in Kusari activity has risen so much with all these supply convoys, not to mention Krupptown in New Berlin. They sent out convoys to Gallia for Cryocubes through Kusari some times and they make nice piracy targets.
I prefer the supply thing to stay as it is rather than beef up the prices. Because what you're talking about is raise prices but reduce time spend moving that cargo, well you're wrong. Cash also needs alot of time to be made, time some of us don't have yet we like chipping in base building with that 5ker of Industrial Materials or Basic Alloy which are cheap.

XD and the barge going to that base in front of Atka Research Station.
Bases are fine as they are.
Perhaps except for the rather exoribant consumation of ship hull panels and or robotics.

but base should not die so fast, I agree
Bases don't die fast with proper planning. Before you build one you should make sure you got everything it will need to survive. Make sure you don't build it in a hard-to-reach place too because you won't have much time to supply it.
What you need to do is:
Find a location and gather the resources you'll need to build it
Get one or two transports to carry 200 spaceship crew, 1k food/oxygen/water, 2k H-Fuel or 1k MOX and 2k of Panels and Robotics.
That's what you need to sustain a base without shields.
Next thing you'll want to do is get your shields up and fast, there are many people out there that like to explode bases for fun. Yet again, you'll need proper planning.
You'll need:
3-4 transports
10.000 Nuclear Devices
20.000 Superconductors
20.000 Industrial Material
20.000 Robotics
The hardest to get material is Nuclear Devices unless you built somewhere near Kusari. Have 2 transports to carry Nukes while the remaining transports will get the other materials you need.
Now that your shield is up, get 10-15k H-Fuel or 5-10k MOX/Promethane and 2k/2k Robotics/Ship Hull Panels to keep it running for a few hours. That leaves you with very little room for anything else so you'll need to build a storage module. This will take a while because ship hull panels take up a lot of room in your ship and should use 5kers to transport them in bulk amounts. You should probably contact some companies to supply them or get more people to join your effort in erecting a base.
Storage Module needs:
50.000 Ship Hull Panels
20.000 Industrial Material
5.000 Robotics
If you reached this part then you're done. You have a functional starting base that you can upgrade as long as you keep the supplies flowing in.
NOTE: If you're going to build in Kusari (For the easy access to Nuclear Devices, Cryocubes and H-Fuel), you should make sure you have a stock of superconductors and robotics as they will take a while to get (Robotics are 13mils/5k from Kusari but cheaper in Bretonia and Superconductors are bought from Planet Denver in Colorado)
Hope this will help the new Bob the Builder(s)

PS: To those that thing Barges blow now that they have 90 m/s cruise speed, you're so wrong:lol:

You don't need fuel or mox to sustain a base without shields.
