With my experience life on the sucky end of the stick and making quite a few errors in life, I've stopped to think about what I want to do in the future.

I want to undertake a career in Geology, or being a resource surveyor, hunting for what resources are left to a point. I believe people like that are always in demand with the current global energy limits. I already have a large interest in geography, the way the world works and science.

Has anyone here ever or is taking Geology in University/College?

I'm planning on taking a fast track A level in Geology and Geography, and if possible Physics or Chemistry to supplement me.

Feedback?

Rocks? R u Sirius?

Then again, once we assume direct control of space, we will need <strike>cannon fodder</strike> scientists like you to go find us the precious metals for us to also assume direct control of, and send ubercorps (google anyone) to go mine it and sell for 9000 profits.

Do it. Ile support your space ship from my nice comfy seat at mission control. :]

Economy isn't the way it was when our parent were our age. There are more people looking for jobs then there are jobs as opposed to the other way around. My suggestion is that you enroll yourself into something that is needed. I wish it was easier and the best choice was to pick whatever you want but necessity is changing that these days. If there are some companies you know that need geologists then by all means go for it. If not then I wouldn't suggest or you might end up being a well trained geologist that drives a taxi under the weight of a hefty school loan. I was a taxi broker myself that owned several vehicles. I can tell you from experience that I've seen many "Doctors" driving cabs, including driving for me.

I personally would go with something you enjoy doing and trying to make a career out of that. If you enjoy geology (strange person) then go for it.

He has rocks in his head....

:)

Okay, seriously though, I took a couple of classes in college as an elective. Do you have perfect eyesight, as in, color vision? If you do not, then you will not have fun with geology. Being able to tell at a glance what color a rock happens to be is pretty important.

In the for what it's worth department, my wife has a cousin that works for an oil company doing geological surveys. He's typically gone for them about 4-5 months at a time, then gets a month off, then goes back in the field for another 4-5 months. He also has the chemisty background as well, and has 20 plus years experience doing this. So his annual salary is somewhat close to 7 digits.

Apart from clarity at long range my eyesight it fine, my glasses are low strength, fine with colours too.

I guess I don't mind doing that, the pay for these things are nice and you get to go to some places, usually crap places but places nonetheless.

As far as I know geography is easy to pass but you cant land a job in hell, geophysics got better prospects but you gotta know your way around maths and physics, physics is hard to study but offers a wider variety in job possibilities (a lot of jobs in geophysics for physiscists), and chemistry is the driest hardest most boring stuff ever. If you are able to understand math, choose some field of geophysics (if the subject really interests you).

Physics/Chemistry is the best thing to mix with your Geography background if you are looking at good job prospects.
Oil Companies pay well, very well. They also are always in need of folks to find oil for them, or to determine if it can be drilled to etc.
I suggest go to a career advice place, they should be able to help you. They will know the current state of the job market in most careers.

Course, you can also look at engineering or somewhere inbetween.

I used to love physics back in secondary, chemistry... not so much but I was still alright at it. I think I can try those as well for the reasons you stated.

None of the career places around here are any good, they're horrible. "You want to work in a warehouse?" Is usually they're go-to line.

As for me (I am also leaving high school and thinking of what to study at University) you should go for a subject you are sure to get job after studying.
I am thinking about engineering, applied physics\mathematics or something related to aero- space navigation, systems or construction (In Ukraine such branches are well developed).
I also think that if you are a competent specialist in whatever you have chosen - you will always find a job, especially if you are going to take the main subject of University (eg.: the National Aero University, they are interested in making specialists related to the civilian aviation branch).

Anyhow - don`t worry about money that much, if you like something, if you enjoy researching or studying or exploring - do it, screw high salary, we live once and we should live for what we want, nothing is more important than the main idea of our lives, and I, myself, won`t chose job I will not enjoy or, at least, without an appropriate level of stress and tiresome.

I am not making ships for FL anymore, I am making my own space game instead:
