I was fighting against a gunboat and a fighter ... the fighter was behind the gunboat (more than 2k for me) and i tried to escape gunboat shots (~ 1.2k, they are slower than fighter/bombers) to kill engines and rush back to the fighter (I can't kill a gunboat alone :/). Have I the right to re-engage the fighter if I'm always engaged with the gunboat (its always the same fight !) ?
I didn't use my cruise to flee, just my (nomad) thrust.
I'm asking it cause the fighter ..... don't support I killed him:Dand wanted to report an "re-engaging fact" ...
Other question, If I flee with cruise (against bounty hunters gunboats:angry:), Can they hunt me again ? (It's not a problem for me, it gives me fun:D)
a 2 vs. 1 is a bit more tricky - when its about that rule.
the group of 2 basicly counts as one enemy - to you. - so as long as one of them is engaged with you, you have the right to engage the other one, too. ( if you allways activly kept on fighting at least one of the enemies )
so, if the gunboat stayed in range to you - or in pursuit, - you have the right to engage the fighter aswell, even if the distance to the fighter grew to an out-of-weapon range.
now, the group of 2 must make sure their units stay in the combat. - so if one of them keeps staying in range, but the other one drifts away too much, the group of 2 has one of them counting as retreated. - so in fact, you were only fighting the gunboat anymore. - in that case, you have the right to pursui the retreating fighter, who has, in return the right to engage you again on his behalf.
keep in mind, - all that only applies when at least one of the opponents is ALLWAYS in close combat with you. - once your range to both of them grows too large, - well the one that is chased is the retreating one.
case 2
if you are fleeing, they are allowed to chase and engage you again. - when you have fled, you are not allowed to re-engage them, but if they do decide to chase you, you are allowed to turn around and defend yourself. ( chase meaning a direct and close chase - it doesn t apply when they incidently happen to fly into the same direction without the intention to shoot you down )
now, since you are not dead, you are allowed to completely re-engage each other in another system that the retreat had begun.
example:
if you retreated ( cruised, thrusted far away, took a lane ) in new tokyo, and you are not directly chased, - and finally enter kyushu. - you have the right to attack the players again if they happen to enter kyushu, too. - you must not attack them in new tokyo though.
Thanks a lot ! (My english is weak but I've all understood:))
So all is ok for me I think, I love use my cruise disruptor at cruise speed:D(kill engine + trun back + disruptor, I'm not a cheater, I can't shot in cruise ^^)

@wrathkin :
It was really fun for a 4 vs 1:D
Careful, there's stuff about using weapons while e-killed at cruise speed. Not sure if it applies here, but you might want to be careful.

It's just to flee, I don't think someone could be killed by a cruise disruptor:)
And if they are enough fast, they can do exactly the same (a disruptor to disable my own cruise, reengage my engines ... then THEY win enough distance (cause I'm face to face with them) to shot and kill)
Here comes a nasty one. What if you are in a large fight, say 4 on one, you, and your target cruises out. Can you cruise out to chase him? Or is that fleeing?
to answer your question: 'engage of cruise engine is considered fleeing' so yes, according with the letter of law he's fleeing as well and he can't come back to the fight couse that would meant he is re-engageing.

But if you engaged cruise while engaged with the remaining three enemies, that means that you're retreating, and therefore cannot re-engage?
Well, in the past, this has come up, with the chasee being pursued at cruise speed until a chaser nails them.
