This Community has always been (among other things) an artistic one, churning out an impressive amount of high quality graphics each day. To celebrate the rise of the new forum, site staff will be hosting a competition allowing our artists to submit graphics for the forum header. Feel free to discuss the competition here, as non-entry related posts in the submission thread will be deleted.

So, the rules are as follows:
  1. Each user may submit one image to the submission thread as their entry.
  2. The image must comply with forum image size rules. (Hijack-Edit: It needs to be 430x79 or smaller. -Loken)
  3. Two versions of the image must be created - one for the light and dark forum skins.
  4. The deadline is the 6th of October, exactly one week from now.
  5. The admin and moderation teams will shortlist three pieces, then a final community vote will be held on those three.
  6. The winning graphic will remain as the site's header until the conclusion of the next month's competition.

Just to head off any issues on the subject, yes this is endorsed completely by the Administration. Creativity Ho!

may i inquire on the rather miniature size regulations added by loken??

i know the current banner is 354px × 63px large, but with a area of 1500px x 130px to play with, such small banner seems well, strange.

Any way to increase the size a bit, as 430x79 means all you get to do is add some fancy text. after all, a banner is supposed to carry a logo, a header and some graphical art that makes it stand out.
If this size regulation is set due to physical limitations in line with the page layout, then no problem. If it's just a set of figures someone pulled outta their magical hat, well, i urge you to reconsider.

the old forum banner was much much larger then this proposed new one.

Example of maximum size; http://sadpanda.us/images/1218612-8ZM1GNY.png

This is why i am asking... not to be a nitpick or just to piss off someone, but because there is so much room to utilize, and the restriction seems rather odd

For one, we definitely don't want anything that wide. Although the skin has a dynamic width, we want to keep it reasonably small so that those of us (yeah, self-interest here) who browse windowed won't have our screens massively stretched.

For another, the banner on the old forum was much larger than it needed to be. Much, much larger. And it didn't have to sit adjacent to a search bar.

Furthermore, with the way the new layout is, it doesn't need to be a full fancy graphic. I may have misunderstood the directives in putting this up, but I don't think we're looking for something particularly large or fancy. Text, for the most part, is it. Just a logo.

I might be talking out of my hind end, but from what I can tell, the size restriction is being put in place to keep the forum at a width agreeable for most everyone while also still fitting the aesthetic and layouts of the skins we have.

Personally, I'm quite agreeable to the current logo. Nice and clean. Simple lines and aesthetic, and it works very well with the textured background of the skins.

Corey is correct.

Also I hate to be one to toot my own horn but I'm pretty happy with the current logo. It fits the theme decently and admittedly I'm somewhat hesitant about what we're going to end up with through this competition.

Oh well.
