Before i came into the wonderfull world of freelancer and Disco, i used to play several 2D games called:

escape velocity: a wonderfull little a mac OS game, getting into one of the 2 houses (rebels and confederates)
was really hard, theres about 50 systems with onely two have the 1 in 20 chance youll meet them in the bar.
theres no asteroid mining and all the missions are delivery missions, trade is easy but not much profits. whan up against pirates, theres usualy one small firgter (will still kick your arse) or sometimes a big carrier ship that spews out like 8 fighters and your skrewewd instantly.
there are no jump gates so you enter hyperspace to go around places, and that reqires fuel (all stations sell it)

Escape velocity nova:
A bigger, better graphics, asteroid mining, countless houses, waaay more systems, more technology, ships(waay way waaaay more ships) weapons and missle jammers, more and better alien houses, and pirates are more controlable on this PC version, highly recomended

these two games led me to freelancer, so instead of spewing out ideas, i suggest you try them mod makers and players alike (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/)

(escape velocity (EV) is very easly moddable with EV audit and mission computer, and EV nova comes wiht modding stuff, but not as easy to mod)

Played EV-Nova to death. Awesome game. Done some light modding for it too, nothing too special. Wasn't too hard once you got your head around it.
I remember the polaris and the psychic story lines being expecially brilliant.

Like what you said, EV-Nova brought me to Freelancer, which brought me to Disco.

I played escape velicty (not nova) ALL THE TIME when i was a kid.

Kestrel ftw. I wish I still had that game.

EDIT: I had two launch bays on my kestrel with delta-wing escort fighters, nothing could take that ship out.

Escape Velocity Nova = Epic win. It's like what Freelancer should be, only 2d and with no multiplayer. Boarding ships is simply the best thing ever.

Theres a reason my forum name is zapp_evn. Awesome game, I've had it since December 2004, and IMO it was the best 30 bucks I ever had my mom spend. Modding is pretty easy, I have a whole folder full of ones I made and even uploaded a few to the EVN Add-ons page, including my BSG plug-in.

I've played the EVO and EV conversions (which swaps the EVN files for those of the original two) and must say that EVO is my favorite, having an extensive alien presence.
