Constructed of composite synth steel layered with thick armour out of a titanium triplated hull alloy, this hardened Zoner transport is used to traverse regions of the borderworlds where diplomacy often takes a back seat to the gun.

Upgraded in the face of heightening galactic tensions, many of the vessels industrial tools were stripped to give way for stronger armament. With these new combat refinements in mind the Zoners took removed the gunboat from its prior place upon the open market, reserving the limited numbers of the newly produced vessel for protection of deep space resupply convoys.
Handling
* This ship is too large to use docking bays, it must use mooring points.

Year pages
Wikipedia has pages for each year that lists general information, events, and so on. I think this could be a highly useful addition to this wiki, making it easier not only for people to investigate the history of Sirius but also for people to add more historical information.

As a player faction founder, I had considerable trouble piecing together the vanilla history of the NPC faction. I had to take the pre-release history from the House design document, keyword search through infocards and rumors (often by year), and fill in blanks myself. It would have been far easier if there were historical events listed in a relatively sequential manner, such as on a timeline.

A wiki based timeline would, I think, be a fantastic resource for any community member who is researching for a character, ship, story, faction, curiosity, or free cake.

I say we start making links out of years A.S. and encourage people to add information. If this is a success, we may need some sort of citation policy.

:I have to say, making articles with events in each century is a great idea.
:In my opinion we dont have enough events to make pages per year or per decade.
:"Tracky 14:46, 30 January 2010 (MST)"

::You're probably right. We can stick to pages for each century to begin with, at the very least, and if they get over-sized or difficult to keep cohesive and organized we can split them up. I will make these now, to the pages I have already created.
::~ Eyvind (Talk) 23:06, 30 January 2010 (MST)

I have begin working on this.

I suggest we stick to a minimum of pages before we finalize the system and policy. The ones I am doing at the moment:
*51 AS
*1st Century A.S.
*Template:Years
*:Category:Years
*:Category:1st Century A.S.

One question, albeit minor, is whether we should use "first" as opposed to "1st" for century pages and categories. I am leaning toward "first," myself, but will wait to change anything until I get some input.

Please post here with any ideas, feedback, suggestions, questions, concerns, or cake. This will likely work out better if I don't end up doing it by myself.

Hit another concern; "A.S.":
* "BC" and "AD" are rarely (ever?) written with dots, perhaps there is no reason for us to put dots in AS.
* Should pages titles include the AS or should the title only contain the year number? On the one hand, it may be important to distinguish Freelancer years from real years, but on the other hand distinguishing the two here may be irrelevant or moot.

Thoughts?

I'd think that a page per century would be good.
One century would be under a hundred words, most likely - some could be over a thousand.
One page per year would be a bit of overkill.

I'd also think that tagging "A.S." onto years should be essential.
Now that the Zoners have settled everywhere in Sirius, some of them decided to mobilize one of these beasts to serve the population of Sirius. Contrarily to Freeports, the Jinkusu has a limited storage system and cannot efficiently serve as a trade outpost. Although, Freeport 18 is still able to distribute basic goods such as Food and Goods and to hand out Nanobots and Nanobats to pilot that needs them.

Even though it is possible for it to be mobile, Freeport 18 would rather buy commodities off from Freelancer and Independent traders to re-supply, rather than returning to another Freeport to do such. A No Fire Zone is also enforced nearby Freeport 18, although it is not managed by the Zoner Council.

Kusari Corporations and Cryer Pharmaceuticals expressed conerns about this new Zoner sation in the Sigmas, claiming that the crime rate of the sector would raise, but no survey confirmed this yet. Some also feared that it would attract the attention of the Nomads and that it would cause a second Freeport 7 incident, but the actual Commander of the Freeport, Sebastien LaHoue, states that there is no reason to fear such a thing. The GMG's feedback about Freeport 18 were mostly positive, even though a tragic accident within it caused the death of one of their men.

Actually, it is rumored that Freeport 18 wishes to open a Black Market Arms dealing within their facilities, but no investigations done so long proved this to be right.

| style="text-align: center;" | 2100 A.D. || The Alliance-Coalition War begins.
|-
| style="text-align: center;" | 2200 A.D || The Coalition gains an upper hand in the war. Five Alliance sleeper ships launch from one of Jupiter's moons during a Coalition attack to escape the onslaught. Each sleeper ship is named after its country of origin: The Bretonia (British colonists), The Rheinland (German colonists), The Hispania (Spanish and Mediterranean colonists), The Kusari (Japanese colonists), and The Liberty (American colonists). Against all odds, the colony ships broke through the Coalition blockade and headed for the Sirius System.
|-
| style="text-align: center;" | 2200 A.D || Shortly after the Exodus, the Coalition takes over every Alliance base in Sol, except Pluto. When the Coalition arrive to take over Pluto, a Nomad superweapon appears and completely destroys Sol. The only survivor is an Alliance general named Atticus Rockford, who traveled to Sirius to warn the colonists. | style="text-align: center;" | <b>0</b> || Sleeper ship Liberty arrives in Sirius and begins scanning for suitable places to land. It is rumored that the Liberty arrived first because it launched before the other sleeper ships.
|-
| style="text-align: center;" | <b>1</b> || After a year of surveying, the Liberty lands on Planet Manhattan.
|-
| style="text-align: center;" | <b>20-50</b> || A Coalition saboteur on the Hispania completely destroys it's engines, waking the colonists. Half of them decide to use the escape pods to finish the journey to Sirius. They leave the Hispania, land on the Planet Crete, and become the Corsairs. The other half took their chances with the wreck and kept it working while it drifted into Sirius. The Hispania couldn't land, so the remaining colonists used the remaining escape pods that hadn't been used by the Corsairs to land on Planet Malta. These colonists became the Outcasts. The wreck of of the Hispania still drifts in orbit around Planet Malta. At first, the colonists thought that a member of the other sleeper ships had sabotaged the Hispania to eliminate the competition to settle in the more desirable parts of Sirius, which was part of the reason why the Corsairs and the Outcasts wanted to destroy the Houses. However, when the Sirius Coalition Revolutionary Army was discovered, the Hispanians realized that it was them who sabotaged the Hispania, but this still didn't change anything between the Corsairs and Outcasts and the Houses.
Travel between neighboring star systems can be accomplished in a matter of months rather than years.
|-
| style="text-align: center;" | 2200 A.D || Shortly after the Exodus, the Coalition takes over every Alliance base in Sol, except Pluto. | style="text-align: center;" | <b>20-50</b> || A Coalition saboteur on the Hispania completely destroys it's engines, waking the colonists.

A Dyson sphere is an umbrella term for a variety of mega structures proposed by Earth scientists during the 20th century AD. The most common usage of the term referred to a Dyson shell, a typically 1 AU in radius sphere of unknown material harnessing the power of an entire star.

Unbeknownst to these scientists, the Dyson shell was already realized long before the birth of human civilization in the Daam K'Vosh Empire, which utilized them as both a stabilizer for the Slomon K'Hara race and in an unknown relationship with the hypergates.

The most well known Dyson sphere in the Sirius Sector was located within the Omicron Major system in the Nomad worlds, near the edge of the Sirius sector. It was constructed by the Daam K'Vosh and later utilized by the Slomon K'Hara within Sirius, who remained dependent on it as an energy source.

At the final battle of the Nomad War, the Sirius Dyson sphere was deactivated by freelancer and Order operative Colonel Edison Trent in conjunction with several wings of Order pilots, Order Colonel Jun'ko Zane, Order leader Casper Orillion and Order operative Diedrich Von Claussen.
History:
The Nomad Lair is currently a Dormant Nomad Hive located in the centre of the sensor blackout of the Omicron 92 system. It is unknown whether or not the Lair is responsible for the fact that Navmaps are rendered useless in the system, or if the interference is caused by the system's location deep within the Edge.

This lair was not always inactive - it is the very same place where where Edison Trent retrieved the Nomad Power Cell which was subsequently used to activate the Artifact on Planet Toledo, which in turn activated the Hyper Gate at The Battle of Omicron Major. The Nomad Airlocks on either flat side were originally protected by shields that were projected by generators positioned on several columns protruding from the equatorial trench. Once these were destroyed, the shields would no longer function. and the core of the structure could be entered through either airlock. The Nomad Powercell was contained within this core area, which was bathed by severe radiation - which did not dissipate after the core was removed from its place between the prongs of the core.

The Nomad Lair was considered "dormant" after Edison Trent removed the core from it.

Current Activity:
Whether it, in the year of 817, is still "dormant" is a matter of some contention. The turrets within the equatorial trench and upon the flat sides surrounding the Nomad Airlocks actively fire upon any vessels that come within range. There are no Nomad vessels to be seen around it, and neither can the airlocks be opened again; thus blocking access to the core of the structure. As such, no investigations can be made to see if it is actually still without a core and thus dormant.

Only time, perhaps, will tell.

Conjecture:
The "black crystal asteroids" of the southern Omicron Theta system and of the Malvada Cloud in the Omicron Gamma system bear much more than a passing resemblance to the Nomad Lair. These "black crystal asteroids" in fact appear to be fragments of a Nomad Lair. This may explain the presence of Alien Artifacts within certain pockets of the Malvada Cloud. Given that these asteroids are described as "black crystal," it might suggest that the Nomad Lair itself is made of a similar material, or at least sections of it might be. Also, artifacts are made of crystal, and there are some pockets of the Malvada Cloud that can be "mined" for Alien Artifacts. It may be that the crystal of the asteroids (and possibly the construction of the lair) might very well be the same crystal of the Alien Artifacts.

The Malvada Cloud can not be scanned by a ship's scanners. Any attempts to do so will result in one's computer displaying an error message. This sensor deflection most likely arises from the "black crystal asteroids" which, if they are indeed parts of what the Nomad Lair is made of, might explain why sensors are so useless within the Omicron-92 System - the "black crystal asteroids" which may make up the structure of the lair wreak havoc with Human sensor devices. This may also account for the effects of some Alien Artifacts upon Humans and human technology.

It should also be noted that the Nomad Lair shares no designs in common with either the Dyson Sphere or the Nomad City therein. It is possible that this is the seperation between Nomad "architecture" and Daam K'vosh architecture.
The Order is a paramilitary organization dedicated to the defeat of the Slomon K'Hara (Nomads) within the Sirius Sector.

Synopsis
History
The organization we call The Order was founded by the last uninfested member of the otherwise unrelated Order of Cincinnatus. The Order of Cincinnatus was founded in 28 A.S. It was a secret branch of the Liberty government that was originally created to research the Alien Artifacts found on Planet Manhattan and also establish an autocratic government over Liberty if and only if Liberty's existence itself was threatened. Once the threat had passed or been dealt with, The Order of Cincinnatus was intended to disappear entirely - it was effectively a shadow government with extensive knowledge of Alien Artifacts and technology, and later, Nomads themselves.

During the Nomad War, the Order of Cincinnatus was infected by the Nomads - all, that is, except for a certain member named Casper Orillion. He began to speak out against the threat of the Nomads as it became more and more apparent that they posed a threat, but his colleagues within the LSF were already infected and responded to him as a danger to their operations - as did the rest of the Order of Cincinnatus, who had also been infected. he fled to Planet Toledo in the Omicron Minor System with the Osiris Prototype. He and whatever sympathetic, uninfected crew that were on the Osiris were the first members of The Order that we know of today. Ever since they arrived in the Edge, they were gathering supporters throughout Sirius to prepare for the oncoming storm of the Nomad War. Construction on the then-makeshift and temporary base on Planet Toledo also began at that time.

While classified as a terrorist organization by the Liberty government, the Order has historically been regarded favorably by Rheinland, likely due to Rheinland's own problems with The Wild, and is considered neutral by Kusari and Bretonia.

Since its inception, the Order has been based on Planet Toledo in the Omicron Minor system. During the Battle of Omicron Minor in the Nomad War this base was severely damaged by bombardment from a Slomon K'Hara fleet. It was later rebuilt as a more permanent base of operations for the Order - rather than just being an outpost on the edge of space, it was now a full-fledged center of operations for The Order itself.

History:
Edison Shipyard was a DSE-run shipyard located somewhere within the Colorado System. It was the birthplace of many, many ships before it was closed and the work was outsourced to Rheinland and primarily Kusari. Edison was the second-to-last DSE shipyard within Liberty, and its closing left Baltimore Shipyard as the only Liberty-based shipyard left in existence - and it, in truth, was reduced itself, only being responsible for the creation of Prison Liners and Luxury Liners. All the other non-naval ship-based construction work was conducted within Rheinland or Kusari.

Most of the workers employed at Edison joined the Xenos or Rogues once they lost their job. A few employees were reintegrated back into DSE in other locations, primarily Baltimore Shipyard, which was now solely responsible for the only civilian ships manufactured within Liberty - and exclusive, big-ticket ships at that.

The closing of Edison may have been one of the greatest reasons that the modern Xeno party is as big as it is and has legitimacy in the mind of modern Liberty. Its scant ruins, if they can be found among the asteroid drifts, remain a poignant reminder of Liberty's once-great and self-sufficient economy.

The Xeno patrols that blaze past the bent and twisted girders of the shipyard's ruin serve as another reminder... that of what happens when one sacrifices economic stability and patriotism for the almighty credit...
Syd was a criminal who survived the destruction of Freeport 7, but was later hunted down by Liberty Officials and shot. He was responsible for handing over the alien artifact that was originally found by Dr. Sinclair at Planet Pygar to Trent. This led Trent and Jun'ko Zane to search for an expert in these artifacts, Roland Quintaine.
There is speculation that his character model was originally planned for someone possessed by a Nomad. As beta footage screens show him wielding a fist of purple light.

This needs a pretty picture of the Lair.

Any attempts to do so will result in one's computer displaying a message to the effect of "Nothing can be figured out about it." This sensor deflection most likely arises from the "black crystal asteroids" which, if they are indeed parts of what the Nomad Lair is made of, might explain why sensors are so useless within the Omicron-92 System - the "black crystal asteroids" which may make up the structure of the lair wreak havoc with Human sensor devices.

WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT PLANETARY LANDING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Designed and manufactured to serve in dark corners of space where the closest friendly base is but a memory; the Barge is a mobile factory, station and refinery designed to operate independently of external support..

Staggering operational and manufacturing costs prevent vessels of this type from being used for any but the most specific and urgent need, as its sheer bulk of size and intense jump hole destabilizing gravity well prevents it from being utilized in any environment but deep space.
Handling
{{Review|Eyvind|Being the currently largest mobile entity in Sirus, it is also the currently least mobile mobile entity in Sirius. It moves at a maximum of 25 meters per second on impulse, a maximum of 260 mps in unassisted cruise, and a maximum of 310 mps in formation cruise. It takes 5 minutes to charge cruise engines.

Angular mobility is so poor that it would likely be of negligible practical use knowing how poor it actually is. It should be noted, however, that the most practical unit of measurement is minutes, not seconds. The only movement measurable in split-seconds when it comes to the Barge is how quickly it will flip when rammed.

It is a common misconception that the Barge cannot dock with any planets. All planets can easily be docked with using the very top of the Mooring Fixture. The potential problem lies with the planetary launch as some planets are stubbornly uncooperative in this regard. The damage the Barge takes during undocking from a planet varies greatly; some planets are perfectly safe to undock from, some deal a modicum of damage, some deal massive damage, and some will destroy even the most robustly armored Barged. There is some inconsistency between SP and MP in this regard, as with most when it comes to the Barge and other ships with special code behind them.

Docking with Trade Lanes is possible and involves much the same techniques as with other moderately large ships such as Super Trains/Transports and capital ships. Approaching the Trade Lane ring head on at full speed and engaging the dock command mere meters away often gives good result as momentum will carry the ship into position and accelerate to Lane speed within moments. Due to the extended time it takes the Barge to charge cruise engines, this technique is usually best employed in one, or both, of two ways: (1) charging forward at max impulse speed (25 mps) in cockpit view and engaging lane dock as close as humanly possible to the dead center of the ring, or (2) charging cruise at the first ring and aiming for the next one along the lane segment. A responsible implementation of this general technique is to employ the former as well as possible and if it is failed then proceeding with the latter rather than reversing and realigning to retry the former.

Docking with Jump Gates is relatively straight forward, arguably easier than the same with Super Trains/Transports or capital ships. Place the Barge so that it is nearly touching the gate clamps, aligned on plane with the gate. Engage the gate dock and hope for the best. If the clamps jostle the Barge to the side, abort and realign with a little more space between the barge and gate. Successful dock is generally preceded by the Barge inching forward along the top of the inside of the gate and zooming into the wormhole as soon as the bow antenna reaches the pulsating whateveritis. As soon as the hitbox (approximately, at least) intersects the pulsating whateveritis, the ship will dock successfully. You may have noticed that some long ships don't need to fully enter the jump gate before docking, this is just as true with the Barge but more exaggeratedly so.

I have been unable to dock with stations so far, primarily due to not finding any docking points far enough away from the station's hitbox or in some way bypassing that problem. It is very possible, however. I have been told that you can dock with stations by aiming for the known dock points (such as those adjacent to the windowed rooms extending from asteroid bases or those at the towers of moduled bases) and letting auto/cinematic dock handle the arduous process of reaching it. Experiment until successful.

Be patient when flying the Barge and the handling will neither surpass nor fall short of your needs.

Go out into the universe, grasshopper, and barge calmly and intrepidly through all those who stand in your way. Just be sure to ask them kindly to move out of your way first and you'll be fine.}}

Description
Formed in the dawn of Libertonian life in Sirius, Deep Space Engineering has held a central position of infrastructural development in the sector. The ongoing project of building and maintaining the physical gate/lane network has always been the primary directive of DSE, but it has lead to the emergence of several secondary roles; exploration, mineral extraction and processing, and ship construction also adorn the corporate profile. DSE is fundamental to the influential position of Liberty in Sirius today.

History
THE FIRST STEPS - ANCIENT HISTORY

Founded in 51 A.S. with the merging of several major Manhattan construction firms, Deep Space Engineering sprouted into a massive conglomerate aiming to take advantage of the opportunities of space. The contract to build the first Baltimore Shipyards secured the corporation initial success and after completing the shipyards in 58 A.S., DSE began construction colonization ships with the newly developed Ageira drives.

Over the next decades, Deep Space Engineering held its position as the primary construction and mining corporation in Liberty. The technology exchanges between the houses spurred an increase in production, leading to rapidly growing consumption of mineral resources in New York.

In 128 the massive Dallas research station is completed in Texas; Ageira Technologies and the Liberty military begin work on several secret projects, including jump gate technology.

In 145, DSE begins preparing Planet Los Angeles for agriculture by bombarding it with ice asteroids for the purpose of lowering the salinity of the atmosphere. In the following years, further terraforming and cloud seeding is conducted by DSE making Los Angeles the primary food source of Liberty.

In 185, the jumpgate project is unveiled to the rest of Sirius. Four years later, DSE finishes construction of the first gates, between New York and Colorado. The mineral abundance of Colorado is thereby made significantly more available, cutting a three month trip to mere minutes.

In early third century, most of the Liberty systems are connected by gates and construction is begun in the other houses. As funding becomes an increasingly pressing matter, Deep Space Engineering and Ageira Technologies fund the inception of Interspace Commerce.

By the fourth century, New York is depleted of minerals leaving Liberty entirely dependent on Colorado and Texas. The first trade lanes are also built across Liberty by DSE.

By the sixth century, Liberty mineral resources are nearly exhausted. Low-yield chemical extraction is put to some use on depleted deposits in Colorado, however Liberty is now dependent on minerals from Rheinland. After the Kusari and Rheinland embargo of Liberty, the ownership of gates and lanes is turned over to their respective houses. DSE still manages all construction of new gates and lanes, however.

In 650, significant deposits of Boron were discovered on Pittsburgh. The DSE mining operation was established in 660 and the corporate headquarters were also moved there from Baltimore Shipyard in 698.

----

THE MODERN ERA - TWO COMPANIES COMBINE

While Deep Space Engineering continues to reap profit from gate/lane construction in the ninth century, the corporation has largely stagnated in terms of development. With the emergence of the new Liberty corporation Duchess Industries with by a young and astute leadership, the DSE board saw a potential opportunity. They watched the corporation closely.

Lars Johansen entered the freight profession in 814 A.S. with a Universal Shipping contract. With the contract came a Mammoth transport, which he christened The Duchess Blue after his recently-deceased cat, Duchess. The contract also afforded him a lifestyle that suited him well; he settled down and performed above and beyond his contract. He did, however, have significantly higher ambitions, so later that year he took out a loan for a Whale in an attempt to boost his profits. It proved to be a highly worthwhile investment and his contract with Universal was soon upgraded and renewed. At this point, freelance freight contracting became the limitation to his ambitions.

Therefore, Lars sold his contract with Universal in 816 and used the profits to start a comparatively small freight business, Duchess Shipping. Within a few short weeks some freelancers took an interest in the company and were soon hired. Three large transports and an escort now made up the company fleet and earnings were soaring. Competition from Universal and other shipping corporations now became a pressing issue. Fortunately, this obstacle coincided with profits reaching a level capable of accommodating Lars's plans.

In early 817 A.S., it was decided to integrate and expand into the mining and construction sectors of Liberty industry. At this point, Deep Space Engineering made their move: Duchess Industries was absorbed into DSE and in return Lars Johansen was given a place on the Controlling Board. This greatly facilitated DSE expansion into the freight industry and reduced dependence on Universal Shipping to supply construction sites. As expected, this set in motion a series of events that led to an invigorated DSE in a new era of expansion and modernization.

A convenient venue of this corporate energy presented itself with the arrival of Survey Vessel Armstrong in Coronado. The order was given to closely appraise the IMG presence there and observe their movements in order to determine potential targets for, among other things, mining. Though the most obvious opportunity had already been claimed by IMG on Planet Pecos, Coronado was full of plenty more for the taking.

----

A NEW ERA FOR LIBERTY - THE GREAT TREMONT OPERATION

In the latter part of 817, DSE surveyors discovered Platinum Ore within the rings of the planet Tremont in the Pennsylvania system. There appeared to be massive, nearly limitless quantities contained within the sweeping rings of the planet. DSE quickly brought out some of its rusty mining ships, and within days was constructing more, the beginnings of the Tremont Mining Fleet. More independent contractors soon realised just how profitable this ore could be, and joined DSE in its endeavours to mine the rings of their riches. Pirates were a constant threat, as criminal bases of all sorts could be found within this part of the Pennsylvania system - but DSE managed to cleave its way into massive commerical success with the operations. Soon, a barge - The Radiance - was commissioned to provide a semi-permanent base near Tremont. The hauls were incredible, and DSE was prospering almost unbelievably. Whatever money it made was directed straight back into the mining fleet - more mining ships, more transports, more escorts. Another barge, The Brilliance, was created within the span of a few months by Deep Space Engineering. It was also moved out to the Tremont rings.

HOPES DASHED, FEARS REALISED - THE GREAT CRASH

But then, disaster struck.

The surveyors had been wrong - somehow, they had been incredibly wrong. The platinum within the was not nearly as dense as the surveyors had initially predicted - it came in pockets, true enough. It was hypothesised that the surveyors had somehow only sampled the most dense pockets of platinum. But this did not matter - the facts were plain. DSE was almost completely invested in mining. There was almost nothing left to mine, just platinum dust. The company crashed overnight, leaving the Brilliance and Radiance in the orbit of Tremont, the Brilliance recently crippled by a pirate raid. Another barge, the Incandescence, was left three-quarters completed in the shipyard. Mining ships were abandoned on sight, as were transports and freighters. It was nightmarish, and the company's losses were inconceivable. Trade operations, whatever had been going, died out almost overnight. A few miners stayed around Tremont for a few days after the Great Crash but it soon became apparent that mining operations out in the rings would be futile - whatever platinum dust was left was barely worth salvaging.

So it was that platinum ore became rare, a collector's item, something that was indeed truly rare. There was little left that hadn't been processed and alloyed and installed into machinery or ships. DSE's stores of platinum ore - many hundreds of tons - simply lay forgotted within the barges, within the transports moored to them. The ghost fleet of Tremont had riches within it, and riches abundant - but it was forgotten, run by a skeleton crew on the dark side of Tremont. There were no active operations near Tremont, and nobody ever went there any more - not even pirates. DSE had halted overnight, and had never restarted.

----

THE OUROBOROS - NEW YEAR, NEW LEADERSHIP, NEW HOPES

On Christmas Day, 817, the worst that could happen did indeed happen.
The DSE president - who had been Lars Johansen - disappeared. He had fallen out of contact for days beforehand, and when the vice-president Aliester Brown had gone in person to find Lars, he had vanished entirely. It remains a mystery to this day - Lar's fleet of ships was intact, his Yacht moored at Baltimore, his Mastodon lay within the silvery dust of Tremont. No one could fathom why he had left, or if he had left, or where had had been gone - or been taken to. Aliester suspected foul play, but never voiced his suspicions to anyone. And so it was that Aliester Brown became the President of Deep Space Engineering, Incorporated, on Christmas Day, 817 A.S. He inherited a rusted, crashed, desolate company; a fleet of rusting ships, a barge and two half-barges; some small capitol; and a few still-dedicated pilots. Things were bleak, but he was determined to lead DSE to new heights within the first months of 818.

Standard Operations
Standard daily operations consist primarily of gate/lane construction and maintenance, supplies hauling, mining, and survey exploration. All operations contribute to gate/lane construction in one form or another; mineral deposits are sought out and surveyed, after mining operations are established they supply shipyards and component factories with material resource whose products are then used to maintain the actual construction sites. DSE is not completely self-sustained, however, primarily in regard to materials and freight hauling. Many necessary materials are imported from other houses and Universal Shipping and various independent traders aid in hauling whiteboxes to outlying sites.

Engineering Department:
Engineers are more or less split into the two major operational areas of gate/lane construction and ship construction. Engineers are also on duty for field repairs.

Freight Department:
Most freight routes consist of hauling Gate/Lane Parts to one of the three large construction sites in Hokkaido, Okinawa, and Tau-23. Subsequent legs are dependent on several factors, but all circuits inevitably end in import of materials or components to Liberty.

Mining Department:
Non-planetary mining is based primarily in Colorado with a heavy focus on the Copperton field, though low-yield chemical extraction is still ongoing in the Silverton field. Other than mining, the only other major responsibility of the Mining Department is prospecting.

Science, Research, and Technology Department:
The DSE SRT Department is relatively small, consisting mostly of scientists accompanying DSE ships in the field. However, the department also consists of a few scientific vessels each with either specific or broad assignments in deep space. The secondary directive of the SRT Department is to maintain the integrity of all optronic, electronic, and bioneural systems in DSE assets. Therefore in addition to those of scientific and exploratory nature, technicians will be tasked to any of a large variety of postings, including: supporting engineers at construction or maintenance sites, supporting miners in the field, and contract jobs for third parties.

Security Department:
The security of DSE assets and personel is paramount, hence the singular responsibility of this department. Not only are Security ships attached to most departmental wings and field operations, but Security ships can also seen throughout the corporate zone of influence patrolling supply routes and standard operational areas, cleaning out threats.

And then, on Christmas Day, 817, disaster struck.... or, perhaps, it was not disaster...

Sprolf: /* Symptoms */

Lawl's Syndrome, also referred to as Space Madness, The Lol Virus, Noob Effect, The Dweedlez, and "STFU", is a medical condition becoming increasingly common around Sirius today. It's origins are not entirely understood, but it's effects on pilots are often apparent.

Lawl's Syndrome has a number of mental and physical effects on people and some Nomads, with common symptoms including strange language, disconnected perception and speech, and often delusions and disconnection.

While medical research is constantly improving, it is often left to local authorities and the ADMINS to respond to cases of this strain.

Symptoms
The Syndrome usually affects people Differently, though a number of common symptoms have been identified. They include:

** Strange, often Disjoined speech interspersed with regular conversation. Including phrases like 'lol', 'rofl', 'wtf', 'pwn', ':)', and others.
** Apparent delusions and disconnection from reality. e.g. Considering the world to be a game to kill people in.
** Belief in Re-incarnation
** Delusions of Grandeur or one's 'l33tne55'
** Sexual Desire to acquire the largest, most powerful warship possible, and disregard for the consent or government and faction regulations regarding them.

People infected with Lawl's Syndrome are commonly referred to as 'Lolwutters', a derogatory term which is considered by some to be Sexist.

It is believed by some that the Lawl Virus is contagious. This is partially true, though in a similar manner to Chicken Pox. After being cured once, one is usually immune for life. The Majority of people however are immune from birth. Populations with the highest Lawl Virus infection rate are Outcasts, Corsairs, and Liberty. Those with the lowest are Bretonia and Kusari.

The Order And Bounty Hunters Guild Core are also infamous for the rampant infestations of Lawl's Syndrome amongst their pilots. This has been attributed to the extended periods of time they spend out in the Omicrons near Nomads. One might think that it is paradoxical that Liberty has a large percentage of its population infected - but if one takes Alaska and the Liberty Navy's and LSF's operations within that system, and perhaps into further systems, into consideration, it is perhaps easy to construct a link between the Nomads and the Edge and the amount of Lawl's Syndrome within Liberty.

Causes
Nobody knows for sure the cause of Lawl's Syndrome. A number of theories have been purposed.

Cryer Pharmaceuticals spokesmeat have stated that Lawl's syndrome is most likely caused by a recessive gene which is a relatively recent mutation of the human genome, having first emerged during the early 'information age' of the 20th/21st centuries B.S., coinciding with the earliest Computer Networking technology.

Scientists at a Cambridge Research Institute think tank however, believe that Lawl's syndrome is actually a neurological disorder caused by first-time spaceflight.

A study by Renzu Corporation has stated that it may be due to electromagnetic interference with the brain caused by either space-ship or docking ring first-time usage, pointing a finger at the design of Ageria's popular Starflier line of ships. Ageria has declined to comment.

Yet another, radical theory is that Lawl's syndrome is actually caused by microscopic, semi-intelligent Alien Organisms which, like Nomads, attempt to use humans as a host to survive, and cause these odd brain patterns. However, these Organisms cannot survive inside humans forever, and die off at different rates depending on the individual. No evidence can be provided to support this.

Aside from these theories, the usual suspects are:

** Nomads
** Cardamine
** Food Poisoning
** Drunkenness
** Using the Neural Net too much
** The Consortium
** Silver Poisoning
** Mutated Scurvy
** and Zelot

Cures
The Lawl Virus has no known Pharmaceutical cure, however a number of home remedies have been put forward, many of which have been adopted by various factions and authorities as ad-hoc methods of on the spot treatment.

One suggested method is simple reason, communicating to the infectee (preferably over private communication channels, to avoid flooding local and system wide comms) in as close to their form of speak as can be done (so they understand) and informing them of their condition, proper behavior, and reminding them of what to do. Often, infectees must be re-taught how to interact with Society, but this is, more often then not, successful after a while.

Unfortunately, Lawl Virus infectees are often too warped, unable to communicate, or hyperviolent. In these cases, self defense takes priority, and proper authorities should be alerted. The ADMINS and The Angels are the best equipped groups to deal with Lawl Virus cases, possessing the most advanced equipment and rehabilitation techniques available.

In many cases, the Lawl Syndrome will dissipate and disappear on it's own, and the former Infectee will return to normal Society.
