Today I decided to sit down and attempt to draw (with a pencil) a space battle scene. I found it quite fun!
I'm not that great at drawing though, so they look kinda sketchy, but that's fine with me.
I'm wondering, however, does anybody have any tips on drawing a 3D type of image? Or getting an angle of a ship, instead of just looking at the side? I tried drawing the front of the spaceship, but it kinda looks funny the way it's dimensioned. Maybe I'll take time to scan in what I have later.
It sounds cliche, but it's the truth: practice. Draw as much as you can as fast as you can. You should start to see a difference in the quality of our work in a pretty short period of time f you commit yourself to it.
I suppose you are right, Dop. Practice is good! I'll keep trying to draw spaceships at weird angles, and maybe I'll get the knack of it. All I'm really using is a No. 2 Pencil and a normal white paper... I hope that's not "bad". Anyway, if I draw anything worth showing, I'll post it. (But I doubt I will)
What Dopa said, but that is not enough. Here are few tips i can actually tell without showing. (feel free to skype me for more details)
1. Take piece of paper, crumple it, put it on table or some other surface, and move away for step or two. Try to draw it. Try to draw all lines you see on it(strong beam of light on crumple can help here). Do it few times from different angles. Then crumple few more and start again. This is best you can get for lines, and later, shading(leave shading out of it for now, it will look bad and wierd)
2. After you got the hang of paper, try drawing different clutter you can find around the house. Cups, vases, forks, clocks, your computer and alike can be interesting challanges. Again, leave shading out of it.
3. Ok, now you got hang of different simple objects. Time to teach your hand to shade stuff. For this, you will need several pencils of different hardness.
Ok, you got pencils, you got paper. Mark several squares on it, they can be any size you like, but one inch should do best. You should have number of squares equal to numbe of different pencils you have. Mark pencil info near each square.
Now, you will be doing gradients. In on one side of square, you will press your pencil as hard as it gets without breaking it. And now, try "shading" square going from hardest to lightest. Try to fill from side to side. and keep it consistent. You should get gray gradient. Repeat several times with different pencils. This should give you idea on how hard you need to press to get shade you want.
4. Go to step 1 and 2, but this time repeat with shading.
5. When you feel like you can do it, try drawing your hand. One you arent using, of course, in different positions.
6. Repeat all of it few times over. Also, if you have long ride to school or boring classes, get lil paperbook(or however its called) and draw your hand. It will pass your time, and you will get better at drawing.
if you have no clue on how to draw 3D, begin with cubes and sphere. This might sound silly, but it took me 2 whole week to make a decent sphere model. And I mean, I dont think im such a failure in drawing...
I personally dont have a lot of suggestions... just remember perspective is very important otherwise there will be objects that will look completely out of the picture. wont suggest the mathematic way of drawing two horizon lines - doesnt work really well, especially when its about space battles.

yes, perspective. when drawing backgrounds or any sort of object, perspective becomes the most important aspect of the drawing.
here are some examples of the basics:
start your ship out as a basic shape and put it into perspective. then once you have the angle you want then you can use that as a guide to lay in your ship.
start out simple, don't try to get complicated at first. after some practice you can move up to harder angles
hm, though thats why I dont like the so mathematical lines drawn by rulers. it makes drawing technical arts, and its so unatural. Just go by impression, never use any other tool than your pencil, eraser and sharpener.
