That is possible. It would be a gun, though. projectiles can produce a missile-like explosion on impact - with splash / equipment / area damage, impulse power, etc.
but we certainly won't have rapid firing homing missiles. Ever. Imagine ... fire 50 missiles - it's as if there were 50 more player ships. They have to "see" everything else in order to track properly. And since Freelancer can't run on more than 1 CPU ... we yould not like the result.
I tested it in OpenSP, not sure if it works properly on NPCs, but it worked on my own ship. Killing yourself with a gun, anyone?

This is a common misconception. Last I heard (back a few months) the devs had gotten the Disco server running at 100% of one core and about 20% of core 2.
However, I have managed to digress from the discussion in this thread.

' Wrote:well, they dont have to be tracking missiles right? Just make them dumbfires, and give them an ammo limit. Even if you have 6 pods attached, you'd only have 70 ammo.
That's exactly what they would have to be. We get spammed enough with single missile pods as it is xD
Personally I think dumb fire missiles are a great idea. I use them all the time on Starlancer, high projectile speed and refire rate, plus they can't be fooled by CMs.
Used to play a mod that had Heavy Automag missiles. They were guided but had fast refire. No one complained about them not working there. Had about half the damage of normal missiles but ridiculous speed and refire with low tracking. Good for a close up assault for blowing bits off.
Rockets without guidance would be nice too. 70 would probably be a little too limited as rockets are much smaller than missiles so maybe double up. 140.
We are desperate for something misssiley for class 8 slot.
@ where did it ran: It is not dumb. It would be a good idea IMO, and please don't post such comments without an argument. Don't support forum trolling stereotypes.
@ All: Anyways, it could be done, and would be good, but the problem is with it's splash damage which would be too good and blow equipment very very quickly if it would have splash damage.
Also, there'd have to be a system devised for it to have more than 70 ammo, as that would be too little.
And explained another theory on the later pages of it, but it does not matter in this discussion. Look at it and see. It is perfectly possible, just needs to be determined if it is valuable for use.

This is not a discussion about factions, Boss. Keep it out of here will you? Thank you.
At least I think it's not about boosting one faction in favour of another. It's the matter of an interesting concept. Read my link.
