My computer has been freezing up a lot lately. It does it often and even at boot up so if my already miniscule presence in the server gets reduced well, now you know why. I can't figure out the problem either and I don't want to re-format without knowing that the problem will be fixed.
For any of you techs that might have a solution: (stupid responses will be deleted. I'm not in a humorous mood right now.)
1.Heat ? I don't know what the weather out there now, but summer hit hard here, and my old pc can overheat and freeze/restart if its turned on for long amount of time
2. Other thing that comes to my mind is RAM, maybe just get it out then plug it back in (funny as it sounds I had situations like this too)

Don't re-format, I'm pretty sure that isn't going to fix the problem.
I'm not a tech, but it sounds like it could be a power problem, as I have had similar problems to what you are talking about.
If can get your hands on another power supply without having to actually go and buy it, swap them over and see if that fixes the problem.
Failing that, open 'The box', check your heatsink/s for dust and clean them if necessary.
Check *all* power cables coming from the PSU, especially the ones going to the MB and Video Card.
Also, as Primitive said, pop your RAM out and re-install them, making sure they are properly seated.
Aside from those steps, a visit to your friendly PC tech may be the best bet, but back up all your important stuff first, just in case they decide that a re-format is in your best interests.

I think I've posted my solution to this problem some days ago, but anyway, try this:

The box is this. You can try to use a vacuum but something like a bicycle pump can work better perhaps. Just make sure you're outside, otherwise you have to clean your room, too:D
If all fails, don't hesitate and take your PC to a technician who should know what's wrong with your machine:)
another thought is Viral... I've just recently gotten a virus that literally destroyed my PC's ability to interact with Icons and programs all the way tot he Roots. Ended up having to root-kit and all, and it was a major pain, it seemed to be unable to run anything but was actually blocked by some other function. Not very likely but I'd say if nothing else works, try downloading Avast virus program and installing it in safe mode from USB and run it in safe mode and boot scans too.
Good luck Doc and may the thing finally get working.
I had a similar issue a while ago with another computer and it was the cooling that was close to inefficient that was causing my comp to shut off.
Tbh, it's extremely difficult to make a diagnosis by internet in such cases. This isn't a file issue or whatever issue that is known, it can be anything.
I think the best thing you can do is to find someone near you that can help in RL. a computer fixing store or someone that knows a lot about computers.
EDIT: Read entire post. Try to cool it down. I have the same thing when I boot up my laptop, it freezes when it's almost fully booted. Standing outside with it in cool weather fix's it.
EDIT 2: If you have a desktop PC, bring long cords.

I had a similar problem a few years back. My PC was freezing from time to time and especially when I was trying to play games. In one month since that started I was forced to buy another system. The main problem was the motherboard which affected the graphic card... or vice-versa, can't remember.
