I have a perfectly straightforward lawful trader, who, just as a byproduct of plying various routes and killing only those npc hostiles who [earlier on] threatened his ship and [now] cause hinderence and delays with their CDs etc, has slowly become ,broadly speaking, green with most "good" factions and red with the various pirates and so on.....without having had much contact with corsairs he's slowly becoming green with them too as a result of killing their enemies....how best to play this RPwise? Is it "OK" in a "my enemies enemy is my friend" sort of way.....including trading with 'em or should i CD their ships when I encounter them? Perhaps I should go to a corsair base and adjust the rep back to neutral/hostile? As this is presumably a common result of lawful trading activities I wonder what most people view as the right approach? He's got an Interspace tag which, while it doesn't list corsairs specifically as enemies does mention "criminals" so I guess I should really be red with them?
I wouldn't worry about it, especially if your trading doesn't bring you into contact with Corsairs much.... as long as you don't go doing really unRP things like landing at their bases and buying their guns and stuff. Since a trader wouldn't be engaging in PvP unprovoked, and you won't be hanging around Omicron Gamma, I wouldn't worry about rep fixing.
In any case, wathever you do, you'll end green with Xenos too !
Me, I like corsairs, and my trader use this to RP some stuff with them... And, remember : tag is only to know who like you mostly (lawfuls or unlawfuls). If you meet a player, look at who he is before looking at his tag...
OK for gentle RP, OK for gentle PvP too. What do you prefer ?

Well takeing bribes with factions oppossed to the factions your green with, could help you to become more or less nuetral as a whole across the board. The thing with the IFF is that, say you show a police tag, rather then a tradeing company , means it allows them the option to RP you as a lawful turncoat and harrass you more, same as if say you was in the outcast area and red to them. I think maintaining as close to nuetral is the best way to go and really not that hard to maintain. My current trader now has no IFF and is freindly / nuetral to most all factions minus a few, which expiediates both travel and RP harrassment issues while on his routes, though I will add he is a zoner and most the facions he's red with are those that hate all or align with factions that are negative to the order/gmg, minus the lawful houses.
My IFF is IC, because IC is my insurance... Anymore question ?

Well I guess green to all or neutral to all is pretty much on the same level of unrealism........it seems more natural to me that a lawful trader would be attacked by pirates and such and viewed as a friendly non combatant by lawfuls etc....anyhow maybe I'm just nit-picking re the NPC Corsairs as after a certain point in a traders progress NPCs are mostly just a nuisance....of course the player corsairs are a whole other thing....and one side effect of my supposedly "realistic" rep is that is that distant unlawful players show up red in the scanner....which is often helpful as not all predatory players choose to have faction recogniseable character names like [LR]gonnakillya or whatever so I could in theory run into a wandering Corsair alligned player pilot who would show as a friendly until i was right on top of him.
I think FL Rep fixing to gain advantage; say to allow an Outcast to buy Zoner weapons or ship, or to allow a pirate to operate unhindered by local lawful NPC, these should be treated as cheating and sanctioned
as such.
Although remember the FL-Rep system was not tailored for Discovery, so from to time to time problems and discrepancy will arise. One of the most annoying is the link between Zoners and GMG friendly against GMG and Rhineland adversary so lawful operations within Rhineland will land you in Zoners ban books. Then you have Nomads attack them and then seemingly everyone is your friend

Kind of missing the point of the debate there I think....we were discussing slowly becoming green with them because of lawful activities, making for an out of RP experience for a trading vessel.
Anyhow, A solution occurs....running a few missions for the Bretonion Military [which are quite doable in a decent transport, if kinda awkward] soon makes the Corsairs hate you again.....and the Brets should more or less like you anyhow ,since you're lawful.
