They're just pissed off miners. Think of that next time you frak with IMG.
Also torrented the movie and watched, I DEFFINITLY shall see this in the theaters.
I was VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY
VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY
VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY
skeptical that it would be star trek at all, rather just yet another shameless attempt to grab more cash like the previous movie, or the most recent TV series.
However, in this case, I am glad to be wrong.
They did the re-boot 100% properly. QUite simply put it was ****ing amazing.
Given your characters name - Harry, the only person to guest star in TWO episodes of TOS - you'd expect that you'd be skeptical. Especially being stuck on the planet with all those Stellas, even if you did make if off there in the animated series... :)
I believe the word you were looking for is FRAKING amazing! (To borrow something from Glen Larson).
Wow...
Karl Urban got Bones McCoy down so well it wasn't funny.

>> SPOILERS AHEAD! <<
- The kelvin had no warp nacelles. How come?
The Kelvin had ONE warp nacelle. If you recall from your Star Trek Technical Manual, the Scout and Destroyer class ship only had one nacelle, below the saucer section.
- The Enterprise being built on the surface instead of it being built in orbit. Isn't supposed that the ship is unable to land on a strong gravity well like that of the earth?
The ship should have easily been able to land. The reason that they didn't land in TOS was because of the cost and time involved in making a ship land. David Gerrold touched upon that in "The Making of Star Trek". I'm guessing that some of the construction was done on land, and then they put her in orbit before loading the anti-matter. But yeah, that slightly bugged me, too.
- The story Spock told Kirk while on that ice cold planet (Which btw was stupidly close to Vulcan (as close as earth's moon if we give them both a 1G gravity), yet ICE cold and unaffected by the black hole gravity) was garbage. They could have come up with something better like "He kept me aboard his ship in order for me to see the destruction of Vulcan, then he dropped me here so I could live and suffer for it". Let alone that supposed "Supernovae"-that-would-have-destroyed-the-galaxy.and-I-had-to-use-red-matter-to-stop-it thing. Complete crap. I was disappointed by it, and thought I was watching a crappy space opera instead.
It seemed that way, but remember Vulcan was supposed to be a higher gravity planet than Earth, so presumably it was a bit larger. Even so, he probably would have had to use binoculars to watch his planet get sucked in. And again - so now there's a singularity in space? Is it a case of red matter makes only a temporary black hole? I was a little perturbed by that - but at the same time, it still worked.
- The crazy sequence where mr Scott is rescued from the fancy "cooling" system.
Yeah - I thought the Enterprise looked incredibly neat and great on the outside - and like a chemical plant on the inside. While they didn't mention crew size, it sure felt like there were more than 430 crew on board.
- The enterprise Phaser cannons. I thought they had Outcast turrets mounted instead. I was about to stand up and say "Cheater!!!!!!! Federation ships cannot mount Outcast fighter weapons!" then bring down the console by doing a gesture with my left hand (as if pressing the ~ key mid air) and type "/kickban USS-Enterprise", then post an Admin notice and shoo all people on the cinema back home.
Actually, I liked the weapons. This looked more like a real ship firing that some beams coming out from a band around the ship. There were real phaser banks, missiles, and torpedoes being fired.
- Physics all messed up. Don't get me started on it. (Although after having read Clarke, Vinge, Heinlein and the like for years, it was to be expected for me to became more critic on that front).
The space combat sequences to me felt like space combat. Big bulky ships do not make quick and smooth 180 degree turns. The warping into the atmosphere of Titan and coming up through the cloud was cool. But how far is the range of the transporter, even with the new (old) formulas?
- Corporative spam. Like that Nokia thing on Kirk's car.
Product placement is part of any movie. At least I didn't see a Honda or BMW logo on either of the motorcycles. And I did LOVE the 'wheels' on Kirks bike.
- Uhura. The original one was sexier:P
Different strokes. At least she wasn't forced to kiss Kirk. And while I agree that, growing up, Nichelle Nichols was good looking, I wouldn't really kick Zoe Saldana out for eating crackers.
- There was not a single scene of the fleet battle against the mining ship.
Don't mess with miners! They've got level 4 transport turres and can blow the hell out of your outdated ships.
- And this one is not about the movie, but about the picture quality of the Cinema I went to see it on. I was expecting better video quality. It was too youtube-ish. Suckers. The ticket costed like $20. :rtfm:
Take that one up with the management there. My wife and I caught the $6.50 matinee, and the theatre was probably 2/3's full. Mind you, it's also showing on 3 screens, too, at this theatre, and on 2 screens at the theatre on the other side of town.
- The Kobayashi Maru test. It is supposed that kirk cheated by reprogramming the simulation so the Klingons would fear the great Captain Kirk's reputation, and flee the battle instead.
That's where reading the books and stories can get you in trouble. I was expecting the same thing. But this is an alternate reality. Remember EVERYTHING got changed 25 years in the past, with the destruction of the Kelvin. (Remember Jim had a little brother, Sam, and his nephew Peter, from that TOS episode? Now they don't exist.) So instead of opening hailing frequencies - he did something a bit ... different.
I will definitely say one thing, too. No matter what the movie, I almost always get up for either a pop or popcorn refill, or to at least use the bathroom. By the time I realized - wow, I'm out of pop, and I really need to pee - Kirk was talking to Spock about compasion. (If you've seen the movie, you KNOW how far along that scene is.) So in other words - I watched the whole thing without moving once... It was fantastic.
