Howdy there, my forum name is based on the character I intend to create on this server, pending just a few questions to make sure I don't do something wrong.
Quickie intro to myself, I've rarely played Discovery, only a few years ago on a different server which was experimenting, but I loved most of what I saw. I left that server when they dropped Discovery.
American....from Kentucky.....eh, anything else ya wanna know just ask me.
Anywho....here's my questions.
1. I notice when activating mod I'm given option to choose credits, rep, etc. Is anything other than default bad?
2. I don't like to join clans. Typically, because it restricts me from a lot of actions depending on my mood. (Do I wanna be a rebel? An oppressive regime? Trader? Explorer? Etc.) I'd like to actually RP as a Freelancer, primarily just transporting bulk freight, but don't want to restrict myself from too much. Plus, if I take a break from the game, sometimes lengthy, I don't want people depending on me in game.
Long story short: Can I RP as a total freelancer? Taking all the good/bad that comes with it? (Not allowed into certain systems, certain cargo, if I attack a faction I suffer/benefit in reputation, etc.)

Howdy! Questions are good. I'll stop pretending to be dumb and try to answer em. :)

Hey! We're neighbors!

The only ones that will transfer over to the server are the bloom mod and spinning planet options. I recommend leaving both off. Also, ingame, type /restart ? for information on how to go to the area of your choice, get reps specific to that area, and a better ship.

Do what I have done, create lots of characters, do I feel like being snarky and sneaky? On my junker. Do I feel like blowing things up? Hop over to my merc. If I'm in the mood to have people swear at me I play my ore pirate.
We like to think that the disco community is one big clan, play where you want. Join player factions that revolve around NPC factions to learn more about that area and instantly gain people to fly with. Tis fun.

Yes. Although reputation (reputation with the NPC faction) is left up to you, if you shoot lots of LN players, the LN and LPI factions should be hostile to you. Work with player factions, they're generally more stable and can spread the good word about you much easier then a independent player can.
Anyway, good luck out there, if you feel like escorting, look around for RepEx, although we don't go into Liberty (being at war with em and all) and we avoid Kusari (dang farmers).
As mwerte said, the only ones that have an effect in-game would be bloom mod and spinning planets. Spinning planets make everything look more dynamic but if you think about it, their cycles would make the days so very short, and planetary winds ridiculous!
As far as not joining a clan, then that's your choice, but personally I feel that there are many people around here who would like to meet you! Most of my good experiences here have been in clans. After all, they're people who you can hang with if you just feel like hanging out.
My only advise would be that you get a feel for the server before you start any RP. This will help you get into the swing of things and try it out. Don't waste your good character name on something off the cuff. It usually takes time to find something that you're really inspired about.
Hey, alright a fellow American! Oregon native myself, how's it goin'?
Here's a quick tip on getting set up to be a freelancer:
If you head on over to the Cortez system (reached from California), north of the planet is a jump hole, top of sector C3, to Corondo. When you reach the other side, watch out for Rogue npc's yeah? Anyway, if you head west, there's a Freelancer base located in the could near the bottom center of B5. To get full Freelancer rep, here's how it's done...
Go into the bar and look for someone offering a Freelancer bribe. Now the trick here, is to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that there are TWO people in the bar offering a Freelancer bribe at the SAME TIME. This method is known as the notorious "double bribe." If there isn't two people offering the bribe simultaneously, hit F1 and select new character, then just hop back on the same one. This resets all missions and bribes in the bar. Do so until two people are offereing the bribe and BUY THEM BOTH! (Note that this may cost 1 million credits or more, so have the money with you.) Once you've done this then Freelancers should be full on your rep sheet. Undock from the station and there should be a "New Affiliation: Freelancers" message. Buy the Freelancer ID and you're ready to go!
Oh, and be sure to check out the Official Rules and the Tutorials forum for some handy little guides and such! Personally i'd look into the in-game commands thread, should have some useful text on how to use those (An example is that you can move cash from character to character using a command called /givecash. Or, you could just type in /help in-game for a list of all available commands.:P
See 'ya in space!
Characters in-game: Jack.Risley , Sand.Spider , and Shamrock , in case you got questions.:)
Welcome to Discovery!
Seems all your Questions are already answered, so I wont spam you with same answers over and over. Just one thing, Having 'Your own' chars is really good, I mean those that you can do whatever you want with them, but in the future, when you get more familiar with the Community, consider joining a few Player Factions as well! It'll be fun! Having So many Chars is a bad thing, cause you'll be inactive on most of them, but having So few is bad as well! Try making different chars, experiencing different types of RP, then you can pick your favorite ones and stick to them!
