I found a symantec shared folder in c:\program files\common files\symantec shared (used to use norton) and went to http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039 and used there removal tool and now can connect long enough to see the caractor screen for 1 sec, and then I get this error............
.........
.........
looks like removing the symantec shared folder with the removal tool fixed my problem YAY:)
I'm having connection problems. No such luck for connecting to any of the servers for that matter. All it says that cannot connect to server.
I can see the lists (thanks for the little beta server thing) but still no help. I followed Dbooys advice running it admin (or even in compatibility mode). I use Avast. Windows firewall is off (I use Zonealarm and have made dead sure that freelancer.exe can connect to where-ever it pleases).
There was a server list in SWAT site. Installed the required program to make it able to start freelancer. No help there either.
Is there any way to make freelancer to connect straight to some server through the command line options?
Any help is very much appreciated or the RP experience will be a stub for me and I have to make do with the single player.
EDIT: I think this is the next thing I'll try to do '-s82.113.48.5:2302' in command line. Is there a place to check all the server IPs and ports? And what will I need to make this work?
Look in this folder C:\Program Files\Common Files, and see if you have a folder in there called "Symantec Shared".................if so download the symantec removal tool ............That fixed my connection problems:)

The only problem in your suggestion is that I've built the comp from ground up and installed Vista myself and Symantec/Norton has not been installed on my machine ever. I've used Avast without any problems with other games. And ZoneAlarm as a firewall.
Things I've tried so far:
1) Stopped Windows Defender, stopped it's background services from running, killed the remaining Defender related processes --> No effect.
2) Stopped Windows firewall (is off by default, but just to make sure) background services from running, killed the remaining firewall related processes --> No effect.
3) Stopped Zonealarm, stopped it's background services from running, killed the remaining firewall related processes --> No effect.
4) Tried running freelancer.exe as admin and in compatibility mode
I've been monitoring the nettraffic while trying to connect to server and it's not looking too good.
I've got my game installed on F-drive. Is GLS/freelancer/mod manager in any way sensitive to drive letter? It's a MS game and from the era that these things did matter so that's probably the next thing I'll try out by installing everything on C. The single player has no probs with the game being in F-drive.
Also I think I'll try pinging the RP server from command line and see if there's any answer. My guess the ping is disabled from the server. And likely this is not the problem since I can see RP server in the list with ping around 77-90.
Another thing I think I'll try is to turn off Avast and it's services. Another rriskier move is to turn off UAC and then try it.
Everything is cool and as supposed to be until I try to connect. This thing really baffles me. My router has all the port available and ISP is not blocking any ports AFAIK (gotta check it).
1) Fresh install of FL and everything else to C after registry clean up and all. Installed everything as admin. No effect.
2) I killed every little thing that could even remotely hinder making the connection and still I was the same problem.
3) pinged from command line the RP server. The ping responded to my big surprise and corresponded to the ping given in the server list window.
The only thing that really comes to my mind anymore are the Mod Activation options. Is there any leeway in that sense? I mean I put the draw distance to high and some other settings non default like spinning planets etc. Could these be the problem?
Mod makers and server people could you answer this?
You may need to completely remove Avast. The way the majority of the AV programs work with Vista is to change portions of the registry. Until the program is removed (using the AV companies proprietary removal tools not Windows uninstall) those changes will remain in effect. Those changes have proven to interfere with many applications that were not created with Vista in mind. Unfortunately Freelancer is one of those applications.
EDIT: Zonealrm may also be the culprit, could potentially be both.
