Sometimes // in system chat is just plain faster.. the PM controls are so slow scolling through everyones name looking for just one is tedious... apparently there is a command to do that, but i have no idea and everytime i use on of them /l or /i or whatever commands all i get is "/l" coming up in a system chat window (yes i know, im crap - but im sure im not the only one messing it up) - The way i see it // was designed to let everyone know that OOC chat was taking place?
That being said - preferably, its better to OOC chat in private if you can:)
The other thing - anyone person who actually says "LOL" in real life.. like actually says it? SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO BREED. That is wretchedly awfully and completly sad.

C'mon, man. Make an effort. Once you start doing it, it isn't as painful as you're describing.

Maybe you're forgetting to add the space after the command. Here:
/l local chat = local chat
while
/llocal chat = /llocal chat
Just try not to use it in crowded areas, it's just too confusing. Also, if the person isn't really aware that you're using it, mark it with something like: *local* as in: <character_name>: *local* I'm talking to everyone around here.
As for contacting a person faster, if you hold CTRL or SHIFT (I can't really remember now) with the chat window open, you can scroll up and down the whole list of names without using the channel window, just pressing the arrows up and down (but I don't really like this method). I prefer doing it the normal way.
Also... Apart from the /l command, you also have the /g for group and /s for system.
Anyway, I'm not trying to mute everyone here. It's just that I've witnessed in numerous occasions people who should know better and usually complain here about this very issue, enter long OORP arguments over system and I think it's just wrong.
Again, what comes to mind is: Do you want to solve the problem or do you want to be right? I think open discussions just escalate to a battle of egos whereas private conversations are more productive and fast to solve issues.
^^
this is the kind of really sensible idea that will get us going in the right direction. You're right, we can't ostracize people for being a little bit ignorant, after all, you were new once. Maybe it's worth (when you see someone talking ooc in system) to just have a little word with them, ask them if they are on the forums, then direct them towards xoria's 'a letter to newbies' thread.
C'mon everyone these people need help not our harshest criticism. The capship addiction needs rehabilitaions not punishment. help these poor fools out.
edit: that got patronizing towards the end, sorry.
Alright people, this wasn't originally intended to go anywhere in the terms of conclusions, but only as a place for people to share ideas as to how to deal in a positive fashion with the problems we identify in game. I've got another one:
Take a new guy for a ride
That's right. I don't mean by it grab a guy that's in a Starflier right out of Manhattan for the first time and fit him just because you can afford some 3 million credits. I mean, take those idle hours of trading and do something with them. Take those lvl 38 guys, that did a little discovering by themselves and are probably interested in the game and take them for a walk.
The other day I logged and saw no RP opportunities to be seized (no one from any of the 2 factions I play, no targets for my mercenary) so I decided to go trade looking for the off chance to get pirated and come up with something from there. As I undock I see a mercenary guy (lvl 30-40 or so) pretty much doing nothing outside of Manhattan (I know damn well how that feels), so I call him and ask if he wants to escort me. So I reprogram to do a circular route around Sirius and grab the chance to talk to the guy.
I tell him I'd pay him a nice amount per route cleared while he escorted me and he liked the idea. From there on, I had a nice one hour improvising RP session with the game. I never spoke OOC with him during the trip. I just kept babbling about that character's stories, about his job, about his boss, about his boss' nephew and so on. It was really great, and I believe that if the guy had no feel for RP, now he has some.
I also found out that you can press Enter and press up and down arrows to scroll through who you're talking to. First up is group.
