My idea for a mini transport would be 1 cargo pod , only partially covered by armor plating , with like 1 engine in the middle, and a cockpit in the front.

What you have there does not look like a ship. What it does look like, however, is a cargo section on a ship. Using that as a base to add things onto could work pretty well, but as it is it's severely lacking.

Edit: Sikotik, they're for decoration primarily. They can also act as a psuedo-shield when your shield's down, as shots that hit the pods don't damage the ship itself.

a quick sketch done in a couple of minutes. Which might become my prototype for a civilian freighter, actually...
now the points I wanted to make out.
See, this ship has a cockpit. It protrudes from the front top. Cargo section is the body in general, which seems a bit "obese" for a spacecraft. I added up thick wings of the civilian style on the side as integrated part of the body, a single hull design. Engines are on the back, though not visible here. added an air intake for style, and minimised wing length and number. (I hesitated putting one at the top and didnt out of sheer lazyness tbh)
also notice how few polygons are wasted on plane surfaces. This model is very low on polygon, which is important when you create model for games; you dont want everyone to lagg because you displace a bajillion of polys...
